Gas vs Diesel in a Boat - good site

perkins marine engines

I am not one to bash another brand of truck , but this ford 6. 0 thing is almost becoming hard to believe! I thought they had problems with the motor 4-5 major problems ago.

I'm beginning to think this was some sort of conspiracy at Ford on this engine. Its hard to fathom so many issues have come up so fast. Ford should really hold some engineers accountable for the problems 6. 0's are having and consider promoting or hiring some new folks to get this right.

No company can afford to have so many problems with such a solid line of products. Its not only a kick in the teeth to owners... its a punch in the gut to Ford Motor Company and their own people did it.

Their Superduty department needs to call everyone in on their day off and have an "alignment meeting". They should be reminded their good jobs are on the line should these problems continue. Sort of a wake up call.

I truly wish all this wasn't happening to the 6. 0's. If a diesel truck owner cannot go at least 200K without problems then serious mistakes are being made in the engineering department and they need to look there first.

Hey fellas, thought i would chime in on this one. My thought is the 7. 3 engine was a really good engine but this new 6. 0 Im begining to think is a 500-1000 mile throw away that is if their owners are lucky enough to get that many before the total blowout comes their way.

I heard the story goes like this... .

Ford had so many problems with the 7. 3L with the Cackle/knock the only way to get some of them to stop it was reflashing the trucks. This reflash made them fall outside of the emissions standard set for the engine. I heard they let them do it anyway but they had to release a more efficeint engine sooner than planned. This was the 6. 0L. I can't remember the date but I thought it was to be released in 2005 and was rushed for 2003.

Keep in mind that both the 7. 3 and 6. 0 are both designed by International/Navistar. The 6. 0 has been out for a few years now in the form of the VT365 in medium duty applications. I think both motors when left as International designed them are excellent power plants. However, when the geniuses at FoMoCo get their hands on them to try to make them work they screw up the electronics and other tolerances and the motors go to I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. If I was going to buy a Ford I'd buy a 97 and before... those were to good Powerstrokes IMHO.

Yea, but to Fords SPec. I'd bet the ISB found in our trucks isn't the EXACT same engine found in Gen Sets, Motorhomes and applications like that. Some different hardware and for sure different software...

I wouldn't count on the hardware being much different. Software, obviously, but hardware, what is there to change? I'm talking down to the physical part of the engine itself. Ok, pistons may be different than marine pistons, con-rods should be identical, bottom end should be identical, valves, lifters, cam, etc should all be the same.

I think that Furd says to International "here's what we need and how much we're going to pay for it" and then International gives them a heap and says "there ya go, exactly what you wanted. "

Dodge says to Cummins "hey, we need an engine!" Cummins says "here ya go, and by the way, put our name on it cause we're proud of that sucker!" Then Dodge goes and builds their trucks around the engine, instead of vice-versa.

As it turns out there are only a few hundred of these 6. 0's that have the crankshaft bearing issue.

Still, way too much considering the number of other issues this engine has had. You would have thought that Ford would have tightened up the QC not let it slip.

I feel for these Ford owners, the spent on average 44K for their trucks and to put up with those problems..... and even if Ford fixs them, their resale value will be zero... .

If you read TheDieselStop forums some guys are on their third buyback! can you believe that... OK, hit me in the head again

Seems like FoMoCo has also tightened the time to replace an entire engine under warranty. In order to speed up the process the service folks are instructed to remove (lift) the cab assembly away from the frame to expose the engine and make access easy to those hard to reach bolts.

I guess I wouldn't mind if I was getting a replacement engine for a 10 year old truck with 200K on the clock. Would make me feel better knowing they were going to do the install right.

But there is something I wouldn't like about a brand new $45K truck with the cab removed sitting on blocks next to the frame without an engine. Would make those big monthly payment checks that much harder to sign over to the bank.

I love Cummins. #ad

Remember awhile ago when NASA lost that Mars probe because they wrote the software in metric units but controlled it using English units? Maybe Ford's engineers mixed up their units on the 6. 0. Sure would explain a lot of the failures! Remember, there are a lot of bad engineers out there!

I would write those checks either AFTER truck was fixed, or I got an ass-whuppin! No way I`m gonna pay for a broken down NEW truck. DK.

Hardware wise, the ISB's are the same, except marine is a little different. Software wise, dodge owners get very little. There's way more out there than what we get. Motorhomes get a ton a different software. That being said, if I was go buy a diesel pusher motor home, it wouldn't have the ISB. It's way to underpowered. Clatterpillar makes a 7. 2L with 330 hp and close to 1000ftlbs, that thing hauls. But I don't ever want a motorhome, i want a truck. Cummins ISB is THE best little diesel engine hands down. When they built the engine, they (cummins) had the women from the front office build it to prove how simple it is. NOT bashing women here, but they used the women because they knew they had no experince at building engines. This was told to me by an instructor that has worked for cummins for 30 years.

The engine of choice in MH is

not a CAT - IMO - but a Cummins ISC or an ISM. In fact the C has something like 70% of the Diesel MH market!

My buddy just got a recall for hi 6. 0. The recall say's to bring the truck so they can turn off the pilot injection. And it also say's that noise may increase and sound like a normal diesel. He is ******. I just laughed, I tried to tell him before he bought the truck to go Dodge.
