DHRA Nationals-Friday/Saturday or leave Sat/Sun?

After my post about driving up Mt. Washington back in September I had a bunch of people that seemed interested in a group drive up to the top of the mountain. I took a little initiative and looked into what we could do for driving some of our huge rigs up the hill. I've gotten a reply back from the company that runs the auto road, and it seems that if we have enough comitment (30 adults @ $20pp) to hit the $600 minimum we could do a sunset tour with $10 additional pp for a BBQ at the mountain (outlined below). Knowing that there would be some people interested in coming from quite w distance I'm posting this in the national events section. So here's a poll: Would you be willing to commit to a drive up to Mt. Washington, probably mid-late summer for a sunset tour on the mountain?

Here's how it works:

Your club meets at the base of the Auto Road. If a BBQ is scheduled, we gather a little earlier and enjoy a BBQ surrounded by the views of the mountains, the club can socialize, etc. Our food service does a great job at these. BYOB is permitted.

About an hour before Sunset, we depart and take the drive to the summit. The views and conditions at Sunset can be quite incredible as you can imagine. The club can roam the summit, hang out at the observation deck and watch the sunset. The State's building on the top will be open for rest rooms or to warm up if needed. (We recommend that everyone brings jacket for the summit). The gift shop and museum are closed at that time.

After the Sunset, we make our way down the Auto Road. An Auto Road van will lead/follow going up and down. All vehicles will receive an audio tour on CD or cassette, and the world famous 'This Car Climbed Mt. Washington" bumper sticker. A few years ago a Hummer club actually had a "This Hummer Climbed Mt. Washington" sticker made up.

Here is cost/reservation information.

Adults $20. 00 p/p Children ages 5-12 $10. 00 p/p

(Minimum of $600. 00 needed to reserve trip)

BBQ menu options offer pasta, chicken,

hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and vegetarian choices.

Cost: Add $10. 00 p/p for the BBQ.

(A 15% gratuity is added to the total cost of the function)

FYI: since this is going to be a private event outside of normal operating hours for the road, even the biggest rigs will be able to climb if we get it together, we will not have to be limited by the normal "No Dually Pickups" "No Oversized Vehicles" rules. Everyone is welcome.

I assume it's in the NE somewhere, but where exactly and how high is MT. Washington? I'm in MI, so anything over about 20' is a mountian, LOL.

Being an "after hours" event, any chance of making it a "Pikes Peak" sorta race? :)

Rob, Mount Washington is in New Hampshire in the white mountains region. the elevation is the highest in the northeast at 3200ft i believe (well, somewhere in the 3000's).

kinda weird here from what i saw in wyoming-- here, the trees get smaller as elevation goes up. heck, i couldn't find many trees until i was going up past 8000ft there.

Well at 6288' Mount Washington is the highest peak in the northeast, home to the worst weather in the world and the Auto Road is the oldest man-made attraction in the United States. The views from the top are nothing short of spectacular.

Hehe, I like the way you think :D, but no, they lead and trail in a couple vehicles run by the road.

Wow, 6288', is darn high for this side of the country. Sounds like a good little trip to take, after you get a better idea of the dates, I could give you an answer, but as of right now I'd say I'm in.

I've been into NH many times in a semi-truck, but have apparently missed this little hill, looking forward to seeing it though. Thanks.

Thanks for the links Mactruck. The world record for windspeed was there @231mph, that I would like to see, , or somwhere even close to that.

Another thing I noticed from one of those sites... . "The auto road is the site of annual foot, bicycle, and automobile races. " I think they need the 1st annual diesel truck race. :-laf

At an average temperature of 27. 1* this will surely be better than sweatin my arse off elsewhere, count me in! Those pics look sweet, but I'm sure they do not do the Mt. any justice.

I don't think Antarctica is all that extreme, granted it does get a little chilly there, but on Discovery they were running some tests, and determind there was only a yearly average snowfall of 12-15", it just never melts. I think it would be nice vacation spot, plenty of open space for a tent. :)

It's considered a Desert -

That continent is the Classic Cold Desert - in fact there are places that haven't received percipition in over 100 years... .
