Evans Williams, because it tastes good and isn't harsh, and only costs about $17 per half gallon here in VA.

If I want something good to sip, I'll work on Dalwhinnie or another fine single malt Scot's ouisge; they go nicely with my Temple Hall Estates maduro cigars. And that's when I can't get any of Franklin County's Finest.

There was a show about the history of Bourbon on one of the Dishnetwork HD channels last weekend. Pretty interesting. The guys on the show all agreed that papa van winkle bourbon 15 or 23 year was the best.

I never new Jack Daniels was not allowed to be called Bourbon since they charcoal filter it. (I do see Jack Daniels does make bourbon as Jong pointed out).

They filmed part of it in a bar that specializes in Bourbon. They said someone ordered a $35. 00 shot of Bourbon and asked for it to be mixed with Coke. The bartender just brought him the Coke on the side and said "I can't have anything to do with mixing this great Bourbon with Coke, if your going to do it, you will have to mix it yourself".

PS: I saw on the news that the drought down in Tenn. is causing the spring at Jack Daniels to dry up. They said, "If it dries up, we just wouldn’t make whiskey until it comes back"

I just found one that I had not heard of before: Buffalo Trace... It is higher proof than JD and in my opinion, It is much smoother!

Bourbon
1. Pappy van Winkle 20 y/o $110.
2. George T. Stagg cask strength (usually 140-141 proof) $50
3. Pappy van Winkle 15 y/o $80
4. Jefferson Reserve $60
5. Blanton's Special Reserve $45

I also have two bottles of A. H. Hirsch bourbon. The distillery burned to the ground in 1998 (I think) and its getting harder to find. Its usually $100+

I'll pass if I have to drink Jack or WT.

As far as whisky, I only drink Islay malts.

1. Lagavulin 16 $85
2. Laphoraig 15 $80
3. Laphoraig 10 $45

Now whiskey, I tend to stick with Irish.
If I could get some Green Spot imported, it would be #1.

1. Sazerac 18 Rye Whiskey $45
2. Redbreast 12 $45
3. Knappogue Castle 1993 $36
4. Bushmill's Black $30

Makers Mark (bourbon)

Glenfiddich (single malt)

Bushmills Black label (Irish)

Never did like JD

You guys have given me a lot of options for when I get in the exploratory mood!

My g/f & I have a dozen or so single malt Scotches here. The favorite is a Balvenie 21yo Portwood, a close second is a Glen Rothes 29yo. We tend to like the Highlands the most. There is a bottle of Glenfiddich, but that was given to Deb as a gift.

We do have a couple of Irish whiskeys, John Powers (mostly for cooking, but does nicely on it's own,) and a couple of older Bushmills. And a bottle of Maker's Mark bourbon.

I found a tequila I can drink straight. Herradura Seleccion Suprema. It's an anejo, and while I can find it in this country, it's up around $270/bottle.

Woodsford Reserve Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey They've been making whiskey since 1812.

other fav.

Wild Turkey (101 or Rare Breed)

Makers Mark

W. L. Weller

Jim Beam

and ofcourse my absolute favorite is... ... ... .

FREE Whiskey!

This was a topic on another forum of mine recently so here's what's in my cabinet right now, along with my professional (layman) spirit drinking opinions:

Bookers (Pretty much yummy)

Eagle Rare (easier drinking than Woodfords, light flavor)

Woodfords Reserve (super easy drinking, mild)

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit (IMO- not as good as Wild Turkey Rare Breed <-- less $)

Knob Creek (the worst of the bunch- that's sad when you can say that about Knob Creek)

Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond Rye (traditional spirit making a comeback- It's interesting)

Some other liquors/tequilas- nothing important

I can't drink any of the normal box store whiskey/bourbons like regular Jack/Beam/Maker's Mark. I'll barf.

Crown Royal is still an excellent Canadian whiskey. I always recommend it, even though it's trendy with the partying "Crown and Seven" crowd. Good stuff straight.

Bells Scotch - - - Can't get in the US anymore, but it is in Canada.

JD is kinda' like "Old Stump Blower"

Anybody remember Boones Farm Apple Wine? Oh the good old days - - of headachs and heart burn, and waking up knowing its the best your gonna' feel that day.
