your opinions please: 4" or 5" straight piped exhaust?

Howdy all,

I am definitely going to replace my exhaust with a straight piped system - no muffler or resonator. I had planned on a 4" system, because 5" systems are kind of difficult to find, and Ted Jannetty had replied to an email of mine and his opinion is that there really isn't any added benefit with having a 5" versus a 4" exhaust.

I'm just curious as to your personal opinions. And I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who actually has or had a 5" system.

Oh, the reason I am even thinking about a 5" system: bigger is better #ad
and when I saw HVAC's 5" exhaust system, oh baby!!!

U and the wife gonna be at the USS Hornet deal this saturday the 27th in Alameda?--Well i think you'd like the new deal i put on mine. . a 4'' stack through the bed... 5'' is definetly cooler however on such a "fancy" rig as yours i'd go with a regular 4'' out the rear. . heehee. . have someone custom order you a 4'' system. Tom. . I will be the 1st to admit the 5 inch on my truck is "overkill". I built mine cause I could make it for less then any 4 inch system. Unique to my system is a true 5 inch from turbo to tail-pipe... that means a "true" 5 inch down pipe... Not an easy task with an auto. Then I went off my rocker and had it Jet-Hot coated. Ya never know... the 5 inch system might like 2 exhaust housings :::wink::: :::wink:::..... much more to come in the future ... ... JB

I would think, the larger the pipe, the louder it is. I have a single 3" downpipe that has a Y into dual 3" with 5" tips. The tips amplify the sound like a megaphone does. I have tried dual 4" without mufflers that exited right by the doors. Not really louder outside, but too loud in the cab. If you go the 5" route, you may want a high flow muffler, especially if you have a good relationship with your neighbors.

I gotta get me one of those digital cameras so that I can post pictures of my truck and its six inch exhaust. It's run just like HVAC's, with the exception of a chrome turndown at the end. Six inch does have its own deep sound that my previous five incher didn't have.

I wish I had a price for a straight-pipe exhaust that exits in front of the rear wheels. I would think it would be a lot cheaper than a full exhaust with muffler.

Also, I do some off road activities and I don't want to smash that sewer pipe on a rock. Any input?

D59 - at most photo places when you get your pictures developed you can get them on CD as well. Alternatively if they have one of those enlargement stations you can usually save the pictures onto a floppy (for a fee of course) - if you're not planning on doing many pictures it may be cheaper.

QuadDoor2500, where does your 5" system exit. . . in the stock location? I would love to see some pictures. I am thinking of fabricating a 5" system for the same reason as you. . . lower price. The pieces are pretty cheap at a local truck shop.

MichaelT did a 5" straightpipe and he didn't like the sound (described as a hollow, rattling metallic racket) and adding a straight through resonator or muffler made it sound much better.

Vaughn's right about the straight pipe sound. I've had my 5" exhaust for over a year now. I still like it (with the 10"D x 18"L resonator), but I'm going to add a muffler instead. I went over the rear axle. Total cost around $250 w/o 4" down pipe.

Vaughn... Yes my exhaust exit is at the factory location, I wouldn't do it any other way(sorry Joe D, Tom from GLTDR--inside joke) Vaughn am also not strait piped, am use a 5 inch Borla shoot out muffler which sounds real nice. I love the sould when you thru over passes and hear the echo, music to my ears. I made the tail pipe with 2 45's a long 90 and a short 90 in which i cut to a 45 to make the tail-pipe sweapt. As for pics... I went to take some a few weeks ago and the battery in my camera took a dirt-nap. let me see what I can do this weekend... JB

I'll bet it sounds really nice when you are pulling a LONG steep grade up a mountain pass with a HEAVY load in tow... ... . SAY WHAT????

..... sounds like a rabid garbage truck (I've heard two different 5" systems now, one straight piped, the other had a "muffler" in place)

Just had JRE install a 4" system with 5" chrome tip no muff, no cat, exits in stock location. I had stock less muff and did not think it would be much louder. BOY WAS I WRONG ! this thing is sooo loud not that there is anything wrong with that. I must admit to driving with the window down in 20 degree weather just to hear it better.
Underpasses at 2000rpm what a sound!
