Performance Claims For zMax Auto Additives Are Unsubstantiated, FTC Charges

The Federal Trade Commission has filed suit in U. S. District Court seeking to halt false and misleading advertising for zMax auto additives and has asked the court to order refunds to consumers who bought the products. The agency alleges that enhanced performance claims for the product are unsubstantiated, that tests cited to support performance claims actually demonstrated that motor oil treated with zMax produced more than twice as much bearing corrosion than motor oil alone, and that the three different products - an engine additive, a fuel line additive and a transmission additive - were all actually tinted mineral oil. zMax is manufactured by Oil-Chem, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Speedway, based in Concord, North Carolina, operates NASCAR race tracks in the South and in California, in addition to marketing the zMax products.

Here's a number of hits on the ftc site on Zmax - http://search.ftc.gov/query.html?qt=zmax&col=hsr&col=news&col=full . I actually enjoy watching all the oil additive infomercials in the middle of the night - GREAT entertainment!

OK, so what does the FTC say about Lubeguard additives. Seems many people recommend their Trans treatment and I never here that being called snake oils.

It looks like that lawsuit was filed in 01.

From this march this supposed resolution has been reached.

Zmax

Guys... ... ... . how do I start?

although the Zmax product "may" be snake oil. The underlying

product known as LINCKITE is not. (in aviation circle's it's sold

as AVBLEND) I have no idea what the concentration level differences are. AVBLEND is the only oil additive to make these

type of claims that is approved by the FAA. I have seen the test

results. They were published in either "Light Plane Maintenance"

or the sister publication "Aviation Consumer" The results were

quite conclusive. The product works. Aviation air cooled piston engines do not rest during operation. The tests were done on

(if my memory serve me) on a Lycoming 360 series engine in

a helicopter application) after a TBO run of some 2000 hours.

The wear in the engine was insignificant! Note: heicopter

operations are worse the airplanes.

Cost for the actual AVBLEND product available at your local

airport is... ... approx $20. 00 PER PINT making it cost prohibitive

for use in Cummins as we have a 12 qt capacity, . . meaning we

would need at least 2 pints per oil change. I do use it in my

gassers. My latest result from Blackstone on my Toyota 3. 4 V6

was "no noticable wear" after 5000 on DELO. 140,000 total.

(compared to prior analysis)
