locking tailgate

Dodge dealer says locking tailgates are not made. Is this true and if so is there a after market locking tailgate that you guys no of? Any help is greatly appreciated

I am a custom cabinetmaker and decided when I bought my new truck that I would have a roll top cover (heavy duty) and electric locking tail gate to keep my tools safe. I bought them from Trucknparts in Texas. If you need web address email me I will have to find it. I made a few mods to the lock for a little more security. I can tell you how to do that.

There are after market tail gate locks avaiable. I installed a pop&lock brand power tail gate lock it runs of the switch in the drivers door that locks all the doors. The wires are taped in the kick panel. The install is easy and the instructions are good and give the correct wire colors. The actuator retains the factory latch and handle and you can't tell its there by looking. Pop&lock also makes a keyed tailgate lock that replaces the factory handle.

I have one of these and it works great! I also had a Pop&Lock keyed lock and it is a POS. This one is the way to go.

I too have the electric Pop & Lock tied into my door locks. If the cab is locked, the tailgate is locked. It blocks the tailgate handle and is invisible. About an hour to install. 1 year, 40,000 miles later still working like new. Maybe $80 on ebay.

I don't find it that unusual, I would bet more than 70% of the trucks on the road do not have a cap or hard tonneau on them, so what's the use in a tailgate lock for an open bed.

I realize most people dont have a cap of some sort on their trucks. It would have been nice to not have to deal with after market parts.

I didn't think about anyone stealing the gate. I never heard of anyone having one stolen.

I also never look to see how easy they are to get off the truck.

Easy on-easy off, tailgates are probably the most frequently damaged part in construction-farming-ranching areas, lot easier & faster to just replace the tailgate rather that try to straighten it.

... . and yeah, there is a market for stolen parts like tailgates.

Tailgate lock

Cheapest I've seen is to take a radiator hose clamp and attach it to the side of the tailgate that allows you to remove the tailgate, it takes them longer to steal your tailgate.



Then I tried the PopNLoc on my last truck, got tired of going to the cab and turning the truck off to get the key to unlock the tailgate.



Now on my Dodge I purchased an item, can't remember the name, that covers the opening on the tailgate and is held in place using the factory torx screw. It cost about $20 and a pair of "Jimy Jamerz" for the front doors.



I talked to a local Deputy Sheriff and they caught a 20 year old stealing tailgates in a campground, 5 of them if I remember correctly. Turned out his family owned a body shop and tailgates were a "HOT" item to have.

I suppose they would be a hot idem to steal. I can just it it now some kid running from the law with his pants down to his knees and a tail gate under his arm.

Went to a boat show here in saint louis and the parking garage across the street was hit everyones tailgates were gone in the place even the ones in the same row as the guard shack probably an inside job but it is pricy to replace the tailgate.

bottom line, I guess, it's a lot cheaper to lock the gate before it gets away, you never know when some disreputable body shop puts the word out he needs a RamGate, or maybe the thief just sells the stolen gates to a chop shop for a few fast bucks, my el cheapo Tundra had a locking gate, why not DC?? kinda irresponsible I thinnks, sooo what opptons weee hav? radoader hoss clampe of tehe affer merkat lok?, gezz thiss crisxmes sprit is getttin a lil stone ss edddddddd happee halodaysyalll

Ordered mine from Summit Racing. Uses a key. I think it was $29 bucks. Now all I have to do is remember to lock it once in a while.

Keyed PopLock OK

I am running the keyed PopLock with a shell. The Poplock feels kinda cheesy, but I haven't been able to pull it off yet and no one has broken into my shell. It is cheap, so far reliable and way better than stock. I recommend it.

I just bought a Bully from StylinConcepts for my 2005 3500 Ram that replaces the stock handle on the tailgate with one that has a lock and key.



Very nice set up, I like it better than my last pop and lock on my 2002 1500 Ram.
