I just installed new batteries in my 96. The new Walmart batteries came with an optional removeable raised bottom. I used the optional bottom because it would allow more clearance for the hold-down bolts to clear all of the exposed wiring. When I did the installation, I didn't know that there was a temperature sensor to help control the charging rate.

Should I go back and remove the bottom so the sensor can make contact with the battery? The truck will be used in a warm Califorina climate.

Thanks.

The sensor prevents overheating of the batteries. It will reduce the voltage of the charging systems as the temp rises. When the temp is below 0 my voltage is up well over 14v and closer to 14v the warmer it gets.

I'll Probably remove the spacer before summer gets here. I noticed lots of boil-over acid stains on the inner fenders when I replaced the batteries. I don't need to give the batteries another reason to get hot!

Thanks.

I have never heard this before. Interesting.

FWIW - I have had spacers under the Wally World batteries of two trucks for a couple years now and have not had any issues.

I just put batteries in mine 2 weeks ago from Walmart. I threw the spacers out. The new batteries were the same size as the old ones. Where is the sensor that you are talking about? Pete

The sensor is in bottom of the driver's side battery box..... about the size of a 1/2 dollar..... it's spring loaded to press against the battery. Wires run out the bottom of the sensor.
