Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) '03-'04 turbo on '02

I have a stock '04 turbo that came off of my truck because I bought a bigger one. Will that turbo bolt up to an '02? A buddy of mine has an '02 with the turbo out and it is a few hours away to where I can not look at it.

If I am not mistaken the 04 turbo is has electronic wastgate control and of course the 02 is vacume. It may bolt on but not worth the trouble.....

The flanges for the exhaust are different & he would have to make a downpipe adapter for it to work. It really isn't worth the trouble..... they don't flow much better anyways.

Only the 04. 5 and up are electronic wastegated. Even so, if it is an electronic wastegate you can use a boost elbow and run manifold pressure to the elbow to make it work. It has been discussed on here before. Will it work, I'm sure you can make it work if you try. Might have to reclock the housings and then use your imagination on the downpipe. Use the 04 cast elbow on the exh housing and first foot or so of a downpipe and splice into your existing downpipe?

The later turbo will bolt to the exhaust manifold, but later ones (generally 2004. 5 up) have thick flanges so the 2002manifold studs may not be long enough. That is all the good news. Now to the bad news:

the exhaust outlet is much larger so you will need to cobble up an elbow/downpipe arrangement. The compressor discharge points differently and is only 2. 75" OD, instead of 3" like the second generation trucks. Also the turbo is "clocked" entirely differently so you will have to loosen and carefully rotate both the compressor and exhaust housings.

Waste gate actuator for the 02 is not vacuum, it uses boost pressure.

Thanks for the information. My turbo is the pressure waste gate, and I have the cast down pipe off of mine since I switch to the 04. 5 down pipe, but sounds like it maybe easier for him to get a HY35 to put back on it, unless it wouldn't be very hard to make it fit with my downpipe.
