I just got back from a real nice road trip, I thought i'd share.

In preperation I did some Preventive Maintenance. With 40k on the clock, I did the routine LOF and safety check along with draining the rear diff (real clean) and refilling with amzoil series 2000 75/90. I drained the trans (real clean too), added the filter kit from geno's, and refilled with 6 qts of Pennzoil Syncromesh (Thanks Klenger!). Everything else was OK. I checked and packed my tool kit (with extra fuel filter) and the TDRCompanion- just in case. I didn't have to open either.

The point of the trip was to visit Walt Disney world with my Wife, 3 year old Daughter and 6 year old Son. We would stay 3 days and return, along with a few stops and visits in between.

My starting mileage was 41444 on 2/16 and that was with a full tank of LSD on the New Jersey Turnpike. The trip down was on I-95 and the first fuel stop was at Sadlers truckstop in Emporia Va. I took 24. 2 G of ULSD and figured 17. 2MPG. I figured on picking up a conditioner there and anticipated a good selection, but all they had was the big bottle on Howe's, I took it.

The first night we spent with my Aunt and Uncle in Columbia SC. They are recent '06 CTD converts from a nightmarish '03 F250 powerstroke. I am happy for them, and the trucks look great together. They use it for their pinball machine parts business.

The second day on the road saw another refuel on I-20, taking on 25. 4G of LSD. I figured 16. 7 MPG. The lower mileage is due to the fast pace of 70 MPH limits- the tach was @ 2300 the whole way!

We finally reached our destination on the eve of 2/19. We passed Daytona on the way and saw evidence of the 500 going on with blimps in the air and packed campgrouds on both sides on I-95. Disney truly is a magical place. The first night we stayed @ the All-Star Movies resort, and then we transferred to our favorite- the Grand Floridian. A good time was had by all, and the weather was perfect, though my wallet is hurting.

The return north began by stopping at a Disney sanctioned Hess station and taking 22. 8 G of ULSD, 18. 1 MPG. Our first stop was on I-75 in Ocala, where Drag Racer Big Daddy Don Garlits has his Museum of Drag Racing. This was my third visit there over the years, and is highly reccomended to all race fans. Our first night coming back was spent in Tifton, Ga. which was un eventful, aside from my Son having some stomach ills. The next day saw us taking on 24. 3 G at a Flying J on I-75 in Jakson Ga. I figured 17. 5 MPG. This was my first stop at a FJ, and it was real nice, though the men's room left a lot to be desired.

The next part of the trip was very special. A long story short, High School buddy went to defend his country in the US Army, went to Iraq and other parts on multi tours, came home to die in a car accident. His parents relocated to Franklin, NC (macon county) after HS, and this is where he's buried. I paid a visit to the grave and to the family :( . It is truly beautiful country there. The night was spent in Canton, NC on I-40. The next day (2/24) found us traveling up breathtaking I-26 (new) to I-81. I was real tempted to detour onto the blue ridge parkway for a bit, but the trip was getting old, and I wasn't sure about a route plan. Maybe next time.

In Wytheville, VA along I-81, we took another 21. 9G of ULSD for 19. 3MPG. Along this road we did see some beautiful mountian sights, truly wonderful.

We got onto the Penna TP in Carlisle, Pa and took LSD one more time on the NJTP, 26. 5 G of LSD, 19. 6 MPG.

We were glad to be home on 2/24. I have off until Wednesday to recoup.

The truck ran as it was expected to- perfectly. It did not consume one drop of engine oil.

It should be noted that there is real spotty availability of USLD on the east coast! If I had a new 07. 5 truck- I would have been in big trouble more than once hunting down fuel.

Total mi covered= 2646

Average consumption= 18. 23 MPG

Used Howe's lubricator @ every fill.

Nice trip summary. Glad there was no mishaps.

I'm leaving for a long trip from Iowa to Arizona over spring break (my oldest boy is in 1st grade). I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew.

I bought both of my sons portable dvd players so hopefully that will keep them occupied for the trip down there.

My truck can use Low Sulphur or Ultra Low since its an 06.

It's nice to now that history repeats itself. Back when I went to High School kids were experimenting with LSD (not me). Now our trucks are experimenting with ULSD. :)

Bob, How young is the youngest? Last year we made a test run only down to my aunts, and it went well, except for my breaking my left foot in her house. The kids were fine both times. Expect frequent bathroom stops. I am fortunate since my Daughter is relaxed as long as we are moving (go figure!) and my Son loves the road, and geography in particular. The prospect of visiting the other states ws big for him. We had to stop and get state trinkets at each one.

They each had CD players w/ headphones, and Nintendo DS's they got for Xmas, along with coloring books and snacks. My Wife was essential in going between the seats and keeping them busy.

I had a big interior clean up yesterday! put blankets or seat covers down!

Good luck on the trip, and plan well. I used Microsoft streets and trips- it gave me lots of info. Get an up to date road atlas- the states have seemed to have renumbered the exits according to mile marker. The old atlases are outdated. I got the commercial motor carrier version (way more info).

Wayne,

Thanks for the info. Do you think a truck stop would sell the commercial motor carrier version?

Oh yeah, I need to put something down to keep my gray interior changing colors on me. :)

I'm probably worrying about nothing.

Wouldn't you know it though. I changed the oil in my truck this past weekend in preparation. Now the "Check Engine" light is on. :)

Interesting report Wayne. I like road trips and have trekked across the US on 3 occasions to the Great Lakes & NE. I always navigate with the ol' standby- Rand McNally. But I quickly learned Rand McNally does NOT cut it when navigating solo thru New York City! Took one wrong turn and wound up on surface streets in the Bronx. Then further south I accidentally went across the bridge into Brooklyn.

I would like to explore the Carolinas and Virginia more, especially the civil war sites. Haven't seen much other than zipping through on the interstate. Some favorite places I've stumbled across are John Thorpe, Tamaqua & the rural PA countryside west of there. Gettysburg was amazing. Clinton NJ is a neat stop. Loved riding the ferry across Lk. Champlain. Lots of interesting scenery on the back roads of Vermont & NH. Also enjoyed seeing old decaying industrial relics in some towns of n. central Mass.

Lessons learned on road trips - Don't try navigating NYC without a GPS; don't try towing your travel trailer through lower Manhattan or the Holland Tunnel; Don't try leaving downtown DC on Friday afternoon; Same goes for Boston

Bob, I hope you can get the Check engine light worked out. I picked up that atlas at the Flying J in Georgia. It was $9. 99 compared to $6. 99 for the auto version. It is twice as thick and is teeming with good, interesting info.

Vaughn, You must have gotten some looks towing a travel trailer thru the Bronx and then, what sounds like the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expy)! How did you get out of that? and where were you heading? Actually, there is a motion picture support outfit called "Haddad's" that tows 30+/- foot tag travel trailers all over Manhattan as actors dressing rooms. They use light and medium hotshots, and they really get around. I can see a GPS getting you into trouble in NYC too. Next time you plan a trip this way, give me a shout! I'm in the companion. BTW, the picture of my rig next to a loader in the gallery was taken at one of our shops in the Bronx (real nice neighborhood)

I too have been to many areas you mention, and they are real nice, especially Rt. 7 in Vermont. Every place you mention is a day or weekend trip for me. I have set a goal to come out west in the next few years on a very extended trip. What kind of time do you budget to come this far east?

Wayne,

The "Check Engine" light has been fixed. I drained the fuel filter and that seemed to take care of it. The "Water in Fuel" light never came on though.

I'm usually pretty good at draining the water every week. But I didn't do it last time I filled up because of the weather.

Oh well. Now I need to go to my local Flying J and check their atlas selection out. Fortunately, the Flying J is only about 4 miles from my work.

Take care.

Bob

Wayne, what were the fuel prices in that part of the U. S. ? thanks, Doc

In NJ on 2/16... $2. 31

In VA (I-95) on 2/17... $2. 36 (*)

In SC on 2/18... $2. 35 (*)

In FL on 2/22... $2. 47

In GA on 2/23... $2. 33 (*)

In VA (I-81) on 2/24... $2. 41

In NJ on 2/24... $2. 41

Keep in mind that I always used a credit card, and that means a couple more cents at the truck stops (*)

New Jersey was always the cheaper state. I guess that isn't the case anymore.

Diesel in NYC runs around $3. 00, and regular unlead (self serve) is approx $2. 50.

Wayne,

Forgot to response. My boys are 5 and 6. I bought an ARB Fridge last year for road trips. I've always wanted one when I went on my Jeep excursions but was too cheap to buy one (kind of spendy). But the convenience of not having to stop and look for ice is worth it. Plus I use it as a backup fridge in my garage.

I carry a spare optima in my truck bed so that should cover the trip down there. I'd like to run an extra 12 volt receptacle in the pickup bed somewhere, just don't know where to put it (ideal location).

Later,

Bob

Man looking at those fuel prices be happy you were on the east coast. Little more expensive to do that trip on our side with 2. 85-2. 90 a gallon fuel. Sounds like you had a nice trip.

HA!! I just got back from doing local errands. My closest fuel is "premium" Sunoco diesel... ... ... $3. 39/Gal!

Needless to say I never buy there. It's a shame because that's where I go for State inspections and they are a good gang.

Wayne I guess I was giving details from two different trips to NYC. . . when I was pulling the camper (not very big thank goodness) I was following my buddy who had a GPS. But even with that it was a bit harrowing. We came ie southbound on 95 and I think we cut across on the Cross Bronx Exp. then all the way down on the Hudson Henry/West Side Pkway. We went bombing along through here since everyone was doing 60 on the skinny lanes and bouncing over the heaves in the road so we kept right up with everyone. I about grazed the camper on the barricades along the street. It was about 10 PM and we were able to zip right through and on to NJ. We drove through the Holland Tunnel . . . wasn't sure if that was OK with a camper, but once you commit there's no turning back. My buddy (who was behind me at this point) said someone ran out to stop me but I didn't even see them.

After getting on the NJ turnpike and heading south we had a great view of the nighttime Manhattan skyline. I can't describe how stunning it looks on a perfectly clear, moonless night. . . if only I could've captured it on film. No other US city even comes close. It really stands in stark contrast to the NJ side.

New York is quite a place, been there 4 times and feel like I've just scratched the surface. Went to the Twin Towers twice, Empire State, Shea stadium, ridden the subways some but that's about it. Would love to meet up with someone who could show me around :D

Yes you oughta come out west, there is tons to see whether you like coastline, mountains, forest or desert. The trip back east run me about $800 in fuel as I recall, and the RV spots ran an average of $30 a night as I recall but we spent quite a few nights in Wal Mart parking lots (free but not very quiet!). We only took just over 3 weeks for the trip. . . spent too much time driving and not enough time sightseeing, but it was well worth it. The highlights of the trip were the Henry Ford Museum, Cedar Point theme park in Ohio, scenery in the NE, Wash DC museums, Strasburg RR, Gettysburg, the Fall Festival at the museum in Kennesaw Georgia, the French Quarter in New Orleans, and the River Walk in San Antonio. Yes, it was a long trip! We did it Fall of '04 in my '96, there's a couple pics in my album.

thanks, Wayne. . 2. 67 in MT and 281 in Jellystone. Doc

That sounds like a very enjoyable vacation ... ... ... ..... but I'm stuck on the LSD and the ULSD. I run all of the lower 48 and read somewhere that there was 85% compliance to the ULSD last fall! Even the pumps that weren't marked as ULSD were in fact ULSD. How did you determine the sulfer content? I mean, did you ask or just go by the sticker on the pump? I always have a gooseneck horse trailer on me, so I hit the truck stops and skip the gas stations. Flying J is my favorite, because they have RV islands, and RV parking and I don't have to fight the big trucks or the 4-wheelers.

On another note, I've been on the Cross Bronx ... ... ... ... . it just plain sux! That whole I95 corridor sux. I was also caught on some parkway with my trailer following mt GPS ... ... ... ... . the stone arched overpasses were beautiful, but I was waiting to rip the top of my trailer off at every overpass!

I learned when going up or down the coast to use 287, RT 1, and 295 ... ... ... ... no tolls, less traffic and no parkways!! I didn't learn this until I got my CB and talked to the truckers, man what a time saver!

Vaughn, You went on my daily trip home. I get on the west side hwy @ 26st. that's where our shop is, which is a little south of where the Intrepid is/was. you passed Bayonne on the NJTP which is where I get off to go over the Bayonne bridge to SI. Yes I do it every day in my CTD. It's OK to go west thru the Holland with a trailer or commercial, they probably wanted to check you out amd make sure you weren't a terrorist, and see if you had any propane- a big no-no in any tunnel or bridge. Good thing you didn't stop. You can't come east with Commercial. For that you need the Lincoln tunnel.

The Cross bronx is a major route for RVer's I see them whenever I go there. There's no other direct way to get to Conn. or new england. Yes, Strasburg is awesome, we try to go out there annually to see Thomas the tank engine (real steam replica) and my Bro in law lives out there. I need to see more of Gettysburg.

Thanks for the travel estimate to go west, I really want to do it. Maybe I'll have enough seniority to set a month off in July in a couple years.

JHardwick, I don't know for sure what I was burning. I can only go by the sticker, and that's how I called it. I understand there has to be some compliance, but not 100% until 2010. In NJ, the Turnpike is LSD, but if you go into the streets, it's mostly UL. NYC is all UL by local law.

If anyone comes up to these parts, I'd be glad to give traveling advice, as always.

Well, I got back from my roadtrip/vacation this past Sunday.

I haven't tallied the MPG average yet, but I'm guessing in the 19-20 mpg range. I'll figure it this weekend when I have time.

I did get my first half tank of 5% biodiesel in Tucumcari, NM at a Love's Convenience store. Truck seemed real happy with it, even driving I-40 at a little over posted speed limits. :) approx 80mph until I turned off I-40 at Holbrook, AZ and headed south to Payson, AZ.

Lowest price was in Cameron, MO at $2. 59 and highest paid was $2. 99 someplace in AZ. I did see one for $3. 19/gallon, but I passed on it.

Later,

Bob
