Need some advice on changing my fuel filter on my 04. I put a socket on the top but it wont budge and don't want to break any of that high strength plastic:) :) Is there a certain procedure or keep trying... thanks

try a crescent(sp?) wrench around the top of the filter. also, might want to drain the filter housing to help out too

hope this helps

Have you tried to break the filter top loose while the engine is hot or tried warming the area up with a heat gun or hair drier? Be sure you are using a 6 point socket and give it another try. Should hold up with a 6 point socket.

again, this site amazes me. I was just searching for instructions on how to change a fuel filter. I bought a filter today and was planning on changing tomorrow.

Any one got step by step instructions on this? I'd rather do this with some instructions rather than the trial and error approach.

thanks

this is how I do it, others might do it differently:

1) open the filter housing with the yellow drain valve, let diesel run down clear plastic tube

2)open top of filter housing, with crescent wrench or other

3) pop dirty filter off of top of filter cap

4) replace with clean fuel filter

5) tighten cap down

6) cycle key off and on a few times to get fuel to fuel filter housing

7) start truck, check for leaks

8) good to go

ALSO,,, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!!!!!!!!!!

And, Do not reuse the old "O" ring. Apply a little bit of lube to the surface of the O ring,,, and follow the above steps, and you are all over IT!

I changed the filter today with no problem. I do have a question though. When flipped the drain, nothing came out at all. Not until I loosened the cap a little. Once that was loose it flowed right out. Is this normal? I was thinking that it should drain just be flipping the lever.

thanks.

Toss the plastic piece of junk and call Geno's. If the billet aluminum cap fits your truck it is worth the money. I had my plastic cap crack while I was in Red River NM two years ago on a ski trip and left me stranded till I could get another one delivered.
