1st Gen 4x4 questions

I have a few 2wd but have never owned a Dodge 4x4 and have a few questions. Do the CTD's have the CAD front axle like the gassers do? And is the transfer case shifting all mechanical, no BS vacuum or elect. this and that's to fail you at the absolutely worst possible moment?



I have decided to sell my faithful 86' F150 "Red" after 10 yrs of good service, looking to replace it with a W or Ramcharger maybe...

I really hate to have to ask, but what's External Lubrication Club?

Everything that holds fluid leaks, the truck is externally lubed and well...

Our year trucks use manual lockout hubs. No cad or anything like that. The transfercase is full manual gear drive. They can be a problem after going all summer and not be used. They go into gear easy. But getting them out can be a bear the first couple of times.

If you buy a first gen 4X4 check it out thoroughly. Front and rear pod oil, color and smell, drive it around sharp corners ( left and right ) be alert for chatter from the rearend. T-case fluid level/leaks. Transmission fluid level/ leaks, on a GETRAG 5-speed,check oil at top bolt on PTO PLATE. If the truck has any miles on it and the transmission was not overfilled, check for transmission noise ( wore out pocket bearing ). Check for High mileage clutch chatter ( after it is HOT ) and worn out pilot bearing ( Vibration that wont let you shift into the next gear ). Engine, "Killer Dowel Pin" position or "maintainence history", front cam bearing retainer plate bolts re-set with threadlocker. Condition of electrical, exhaust, Front axle trunions and bearings. U-joints inside steering knuckes (4X4 ), front driveshaft CV-joint condition (easy fix) indicator of hard use or neglect. Rear brakes with proper size brake shoes, 3" wide on a 3/4 ton. Front brake pads and calipers, Front wheel bearings if used in a mountainous environment, function of Lockout Hubs. Just some thoughts based on my own 'Old Ugly", yes they leak some oil. GregH

These are all the reasons I have to sell ole Red... Ahole who owned it for the last 10 years could have maintained it better...



I found a Ramcharger locally with a fixer upper price of $350. 00

He does. The Dodges were purchased on the lower end of the spectrum and gone thru as much as possible. The Ford was bought 10 yrs old with real low miles and didn't need or get much attention until these last few as it sits approx. 9 months out of the year.
