Sounds like a stupid question (and I don't feel good about asking it), but last time I changed the fuel filter, the whole thing came out of the block. When I removed the drain unit on the bottom, everything fell apart.

Question therefore: when changing the fuel filter, HOW do I get the drain unit out and back in? Just poppin'?

The drain should screw out by hand , unless it got too tight last time , you could use a channel locks , but be careful , you do not want to break .

I have to get the channel locks every time for the drain valve. Use a paper towel or cloth to prevent marring the drain assembly. One thing you can do for your fuel heater is to get a metal putty knife and tighten the heater assembly on there (there are 2 slots in the bottom of the bolt) with the knife til it wont go no more. Then install the filter hand tight. I have had to put loctite on the threads of the fuel heater bolt, but be careful where the loctite goes- you dont want it in your fuel.

I didnt know Fram made fuel fitlers for our pickups.

 I would return that Fram filter. I wouldn't wiss in one. Baldwin BF1232 or Fleetguard FS1232 only! There is a water separator available that doesn't use the WIF sensor, FS1221 or BF1221, it only has a drain knob on the bottom. I get these cheaper than the OEM filter.

I always use channel locks with a shop towel on the WIF sensor. You should also get that filter spud/adaptor threaded into the cylinder head nice and tight so it doesn't come out again during the next fuel filter change.

If you break one Geno's sells them for $19. 00 I think. I found this out too late. I paid the Dodge Dealer $45. 00 for one. Look under filters on their site if need be. (funny thing, I couldnt type steeler with an a. It posted ***s)

Anybody EVER get water out of their filter on a truck?

I never have... never recall hearing about anyone finding water either.

what was that filter number that doesn't have a drain??? Someone posted it a while ago.

Thanks.

Someone like that?;) FS1221, BF1221.

Edit: oh wait you don't want a drain... I think those are only FF (fuel filters), not FS (fuel/water separators). If you use a FF filter, it won't do any water separating in the event you do get water in your fuel. It will only filter the fuel. I would not use one, unless you have a FS downstream or upstream in your fuel system. At minimal use the FS1221, no sensor port, just a drain.

Jay I did a search, here are two of them with no drain. FF5052, FF5018. Fleetguard says they are obsolete and are replaced by the 'user friendly' FF42000.

I got some old stock FF5018's but you are correct the user friendly FF42000 is the new part number. Its an interesting filter. It has a 1/2" square for a ratchet in the bottom and its made so it can unscrew, but for tightening the design is such that the ratchet head will slip out once its tight enough to prevent overtightening.

Another tip I have is to use something like a brake spoon when tightening the filter stud. This will make sure you get the filter stud tight enough so it does not come undone again.

A *LOT* of people have had problems with the fuel heaters coming loose this winter. Gasket part numbers are in the sticky.

Bill, Thanks for the parts numbers. 5052 was what I had on the 6bta marine. didn't realize the filter heads were the same size.
