I have been Beta testing High Tech's new HTTss 71 turbo and all I can say it is unreal. I have been fortunate to be testing the very first one fully polished latest revision HTT turbo, which I think will revolutionize a new breed of turbos for the next generation for years to come. The one I have been testing is a HTTss 71/16 (ss standing for stainless steel) exhaust housing as compared to the cast iron as we commonly know today. The ss housing walls are twice as thick as the standard housing. This retains the heat, converting it to usable energy. It makes for a 10% faster spool-up and over all responsiveness. It has a larger dual wastegate ports, which increases wastegate flow by almost 100%. The ss housing is resistant to cracking, corrosion, and rust providing increased housing longevity. In my use I have seen an average EGT reduction of 100* during driving, and at WOT 1400* max. Oo. Previously when I raced I would bury the EGT needle 1600* +. The turbo spools quite fast for a large charger, and the power band is consistant and strong from the start, midrange, and at WOT. I am very impressed with this turbo, and the best one I have used todate. I have nick-named it the "golden Nugget" as if you get the fully polished one, the ss (stainless steel) exhaust housing changes from Silver to Gold color. :D It's like it makes money for you !! See pic attached.

This is another first for High Tech Turbo and will be avaliable in two sizes-designated 13 and 16. Sale of these new turbo's will be available from High Tech and their distributors after the first of April. . You will not be disappointed.

HeberRam,

Great post. Thanks for doing the dirty work of beta testing, I KNOW it had to be hard to find someone to volunteer;)

What about surging?

Since the ss turns "gold" does that mean the value appreciates?

Godspeed,
Trent

test results

Wildmanben, the one I am testing is a 71mm turbine wheel.

blacksheepdiesel, you are right, it took at lot of convincing for me to try this new turbo, but I did it in the end for the sake of the group. . :-laf :-laf

To be honest with you, on surging, I live at 5800' elevation, and work at 8200'. underload, at approx. 1600 rpm there is ever so slight amount of surging. You come out of it at about 1800 rpm. ( now that is with my mods and set-up). On the flat there is no surging at all. With the larger exhaust housing 16mm, you can power out of the surge real fast by pushing down on the go petal. I would imagine it would be non-existant at lower elevations. For those that tow, High Tec turbo's will be offering a 13mm exhaust housing, for "real quick" spooling and heat reduction. I have tried just about every turbo out there and this is the best I have tried todate. It spools very fast, cools really fast, runs cooler average 100*, midrange power, looks really cool:cool: , especially if you get the completely polished one, and yes I believe it changes to gold the more you use it. :D Can't say enough. The "golden Nugget" is definately the new guy on the block.

Turbo's ????

Can you list the "top" turbo's you've tried? Just wonder how it would do with my mods?...

The HTT ss 71/16mm is primarly a competition turbo, however, saying that I do use it as a daily driver. It likes a lot fuel to make it go. Looking at your mods, the II sps62 is a very good turbo for your set-up. I don't see any injectors, or fass type fueling mods in your signature. To really get benefit from a larger tubo, you need to combine with more fuel, ie. injectors, fueling box, modded CP3, fuel pump etc. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve? High Tech Turbo will be offering the ss (stainless steel) housing on most of their turbo's separately as well. You may want to contact them for more information concerning your application, and possible conversion. I don't want to list all the turbos I've tried, as I don't want to get into a turbo war with any vendors. The various turbos that I've tried have all been inconjuction with my continued up-grades and in most part very good. There are many good turbo's out-there and each has its limits, depending on your individual needs, towing, racing, sled pulling, driveability, HP rating etc. There is no one turbo, that will satisfy the needs of every single truck. The turbo industry has grown leaps and bounds over the last few years, much like computers. I believe HTT ss series is a first of many changes to come and I believe it will be a new standard for the future. Because of it's stainless steel design, and increased wastegate area, mode casting process makes for a smoother finish, promoting better airflow and heat reduction, able to withstand higher heat temperatures comparied to cast iron, and not sacrafice performance is pretty neat in my opinion.

HeberRam, Thanks for the write up. At what RPM does this new turbo light off at?

You can ramp it up on the get go... basically 1500 rpm +. Once you get some boost, it will go. It has a great power band from low RPM right through midrange to top end. Very smooth and strong. At least on my truck, lag then B]"slam thankyou mam"[/B] feel... like some other turbo's, more like we are going, going, going, going,. . gone feel. :--)

Good to hear the info on the new turbo. I have on out going into a customers truck, waiting to hear back from him. Expecting some very good things from this turbo.

I just received the 64mm compressor version of this. I'm going to see how it compares to my current SPS62. I'm sure there will be more lag due to the 16cm vrs . 8, and 62 vrs 64 on the compressor. Question is how much. Hopefully my little primary will allow me to still daily drive it. Wastegate design is impressive(and large).

So how did it work out for you??

wow... I am on the list to get one of these exh housings, but the funds are a bit thinner than when I got on the list, haha...

Thats awesome that the housing is working as what I heard it would.

Gotta love the bling-bling

Heber, are you going to be anywhere near Orem this Thursday? Have to pick up a car there and might want to check this critter out first hand.

It's coming soon - I think that Pro 66 with the new stainless housing is going to be killer. I kinda hate I spent a bunch of money on a new set of twins. :{ But I'm sure it'll be worth it.

I just had the 62mm unpolished version of this put on my truck a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it's my first turbo, so I can't give you any comparisons. I can tell you I got put on the list for it back in September, and it was a long wait. I can also tell you that these things are rarer than hens teeth, and if you are in a hurry, Craig Johnson @ Big Power has one of the very few remaining polished ones in the country. I heard HT was going to make a few more changes which will delay the next batch. There is a fit issue on some 3rd gens, but we learned the workaround.

The fit issue has been worked out. It was caught pretty quick they had the fix sent to one of my customers before he had a chance to put the turbo on the truck.
