I'm looking for some sugestions and imput on modifacations to my 03, I'm not sure what to do first, exhaust, intake, progamer etc, and what others have tried out for upgrades and brands and liked or disliked. I would apreciate any sugestions or likes and dislikes. there just seems to be so many brands and products to chose from, I figured some more experienced people could keep me from making some mistakes. thanks Mike:confused:
 
Before doing any mods gauges should be the first thing you do.
Pyro- preturbo lets you see what the motor is doing and post turbo lets you see how the turbo is doing. Post is usually 100-300 deg cooler than pre.

Boost- usually the intake horn makes the best spot

Auto transmission- temp gauge there are many different ways to mount.

Fuel pressure into the CP3 is a good one also. Mine is in work.

Stay away from pressure boxes till you get some after market injectors. The stock ones can/will crack with to much fuel pressure.

Air intake. most people don't like K&N because of questionable filtration. If you get an aFe setup get the PG7 filter. It meets cummins filtratioan requirements but it is an oil based filter but aFe has come out with paper but I havn't heard anything on it in a while.

Take the big part of the stock air tube going into the turbo and remove the guts. Also there is a ring held in the intake of the turbo that is held in with a snap ring. this makes more turbo whistle if you like that and I do :)

Watch out for the bombing slope. Its steep and covered with moss:-laf

You really need to install guages with first like post above. I personally wish I did first thing but still haven't gotten around to it. I am simply watching EGT with the knowledge that Coolant soaks up 1/3 of the EGT heat. But I wasn't fueling as bad as I will be this year. so this year 1st thing on the list is gauges so I can monitor everything. its convient to be able to look at a gauge and it tell you everything rather than look at a guages that monitors something else and process that infomation in my head for EGT then I only know if its high or low. But there is no peace in mind without gauges. Boost i am in the desert taking a dump with out toilet paper or even a leaf from a tree. trans temp I just have to use common sense. But theres no peace in mind once so ever and luckily my truck is not used for towing very often mainly playing.



Also to keep EGT's in check with additional fueling whether the fuelling is for fuel economy or additional power you need to do something with the exhaust to control egt's I simply made my own straight pipe one day when I got bored at work. I got ride of the Cat and the muffler. I saw a 2 mpg increase. personally its not that loud. I am getting POed about some of the gassers in this area with mufflers that are producing alot of exhaust droning noises so bad I woke up with ringing ears this morning and only got 3 hours of sleep. And he was only doing bout 1500 rpm. my truck is only LOUD when I put the pedal through the floorboard and peg it against the transmission case. also my truck is loud when I go over water such as driving by a lake on a peaceful sunday. very cheap to do but well worth it as it has saved me alot of money a the pumps.





From the impression I am getting from you I think you would like to keep you warranty. therefore start off with smarty downloader, quadboost fooler, edge ez, then later remove the edge ex and install the TST PowerMaxCR R49 with the rest all stacked.



the AFE stage 2 is the only air intake I reccomend. if you are going to be spending the money what is a extra 30 to buy the best that will improve air flow. Diesel power mag tested all the big guys air intakes on the dyno and with a air flow meter. The AFE stage 2 was the best. Also its been like 4-6 years but Fourwheeler mag (I believe) is who it was did a test on the major intake companies and found AFE was the best flowing then too. Don't waste your money or time on anything else. I may have my own opinions but my opinions are backed by my common sense and scientific testing that someone else paid for.



Then by the time you get to installing that much you will have been on TDR long enough to catch on and will be self reliant on picking your own setup. But I would suggest FASS fueling also remember that they don't make the noise they used to and are silent now.

Just wanted toreply to Bodie, I wouldlike to keep the money resonable, but willing to pay for the power, Iwould like to increase milage, and also,have the extra power for highway passing, and fortowing, I don't tow all the time,but when I do its usally kind of heavey, 6 ton trailer with a bobcat, and attachments with steel tracks on it,or brush chippers, they range between 5000lbs and up to around 10,000lbs,I wouldliketo keep the warrantyintact as long as possible, sothats what i'm up against here, and I just want to say thanks again to all of u that have replied!

Please do not try gauging your egts this way. EGTs change very quickly, coolant temps do not, especially based on the factory gauge. This sounds like a very fast way to burn your truck up.

I have the Banks Techni-Cooler kit was well and love it, throttle resonse was improved and egts were def a little lower. I just ordered the ATS manifold and a SFS Turbo as well. I love my AFE intake and would def recommend it without question. I have the Juice w attitude monitor. I love it and having all the gauge readings on one screen was worth the money to me. Also, I would look into at least a full 4" full flow exhaust to help the turbo spool and breath better. It's all about money but when you start it just doesn't stop. One thing leads to another and your 7k into your mods and throwing another 2k down for injectors and water/meth injection. Once the mod bug bites ya it doesn't let go.

OK!



First and foremost you NEED guages, EGT, Boost are primary, and a FP gauge is a good thing to have, but as long as you stay above 10psi on a stock CP3 you dont have anything to worry about. BD makes a low FP kit that lights up a LED if you drop below 5psi. It is about $80 compared to a $200 gauge.



After gauges I say a Smarty would keep a huge smile on your face. :D Use SW1 for towing, and depending on transmission mods and fuel system you can go to 130hp with the Smarty on your year.



With the Smarty on higher levels you will need a fuel system and transmission upgrades. I would drop fuel pressure with the Smarty on SW3 before the FASS. With an auto you can start with a good torque converter and valve-body to hold the power, but you need to be easy on boosted launches. Billet shafts and a good flex plate will be next in order to keep you rockin. Oo.
