Anyone want to share their install tips or pics for a firestik fender mount on a 3rd gen? I ordered one for my '04. 5 since it worked so well on my '99. However, it looks like I will have to run it quite a bit further forward on the fender to line up with a fender bolt. The rear most fender bolt doesn't line up. How have you guys used this mount? Put it on the second fender bolt, or modify the mount to work with the fender bolt nearest the cab? I really don't like the idea of it being mounted too far forward on the fender.

have a 2 foot firestik in first bolt from window. looks good to me. almost across from the radio antena. got a mount from radio shack put another small hole under the hood to insure it can't twist.

I have a buddy that has two firestiks, one on each side. They sit just slightly forward of the FM antenna. Sorry, no pictures though. I'll see if I can get some.

I see fender mounts, bed rail mounts and bumper mounts that are placed improperly all the time ... ... ... ... ... ... remember, these types of mounts should be placed on the passenger side of the vehicle.

I looked at the fender mounting too. Still have not decided about a permanent antenna, am using a mag mount right now. I have a panic rack and have been considering a ball type mount on it. Also considering a roof mount base loaded. Some have talked about radio interference and our electronics, so I wonderded about how antenna location would affect things?

I have one of those all in the mic Cobra radios, legal power output, so I am not sure if it's added power that is causing problems to those having problems or antenna placement? I have the mag mount centered at the rear of the cab, no electronic problems.

JHardwick - Why should these mounts be located on the passenger side of the vehicle specifically? I can understand about bumper mounts or bed rail mounts not working properly unless you use a top-loaded or center-loaded antenna. Wouldn't the ground plane be the same regardless of left or right fender mounting?

The antenna uses the vehicle as the ground plane and the area of propagation will follow the vehicle.

If you mount on the left rear bumper, the area of propagation will go towards the right front. As you look out your windshield, you stongest RF output will be in front of you to the right ... ... ... ... . oncoming trafffic is to the left.

In your current configuration CDonaldson, your signal should be strongest forward and centered. I have my roof mount centered on the cab and should be getting near omni directional.

Also, the bed does not make near as good a ground plane as the roof top.
