Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Ok 24 V'ers... Work Truck Power Upgrades

A guy i've met in my town from talking to him about his 2001 4x4 Auto QC LB loves the power of my truck. I think hes already got a bit of the bombing bug. In the winter, this truck plows, with a full 8ft salter, and in the summer, tows a dump trailer, as well as landscape equipment. On top of that, it is his daily driver. I've already talked him into gauges, what direction should i point him in for a box. Already put a BHAF on it, and explained to him as much as i can about general care and operation. He needs something fairly cheap, good power without torching the transmission first week, and serious reliability. What do you think???

Rather than gauges he should get an Edge juice with attitude. It is a box with monitor. Good all in one deal and a lot cleaner and neater than gauges. If he already got gauges go with a smarty. if he wants more power for cheap look for a used edge comp. Don't forget the basics, intake and 4 inch exh first.

hmmm. . that sounds like a nice setup. What will an edge w/ attitude setup cost in your American Dollars?

I am guessing around 800-1000. It could be found cheaper if you shop around. If he buys gauges and a comp box he will be at the same cost overall. Bosch 275 injectors

I use my truck for work everyday and wish I had installed these injectors when it was new. Big improvement in power and torque and when you add a box or tuner hold on. Big grins. I got mine from City Diesel. Ponz

I'd recomend a SMARTY on SW3 for his work. Any more than that for sure the transmission will :{

After all my mods, I vote for going with a Smarty first, however you really need gauges before anything.

BtW... . 24V: Is high idle activated from the factory, or is it unlocked with a box, like the 3 CYL high idle?

I recommend 275s and a true torque power module by Diesel Dynamics. TTPM has less harsh timing than the ez and comp, its the same box just timed different for DD so you dont fry the VP-44 and/or clutch. The 275's will give him a milder power increase without tons of smoke and still maintain a reasonable fuel mileage. He would be looking at about $600-$800 depending where he bought the items and if used or new.

Found my juice with add on ebay for under $700 guys will tell you not to buy off ebay because no warrenty but when mine had a problem edge sent me a brand new one i would buy off there again

Smarty & 275RVs is capable of giving him more power than he needs with what he does but is capable of being set for the power he wants/needs. Smarty gives the power in the low and mid rpm bands which is where he needs the most power for what he does; the turbo spool up is incredible with Smarty. The other boxes will come on stronger at mid and upper rpm ranges, not where he needs it for the work he does.

Tested side by side he would be more pleased with Smarty than any other for how he uses the truck.

i would stay at 65hp or under..... any more then that he could be looking for a trans..... and with towing that puts a lot of ware and tear on it also



gages are a must... . a fuel pressure gage ASAP.

I tow, plow & spead salt too..... he will love the smarty. It is the best for towing hands down. It is also the only tuner that enables his high idle/ 3 cylinder too.

I would not add any power above stock to a truck with a stock LP..... I learned the hard way$$$$$$$$
