I was getting my oil changed today and the service writer said look at this memo from the service manager. It seems the 2007 Dodge diesel uses a special oil for which they will charge $220 for a oil change. I don't know if this is fact, but that is what he told me.

look in the owners manual or possibly on the oil fill cap. it should tell you the recommended viscosity and SAE rating. look for CI-4 or a rating starting with a "C". some manufacturers do ship from the factory with synthetic oil and if that is the case the owners manual should give you the TRUE story.

if your dealer is not used to working on diesels, they will consider it "special" oil because it is a different rating than that for gas engines.

most likely, it is NOT that special. even 10 quarts of AMSOIL doesn't cost that much.

good luck.

I assume by 2007, they are referring to the 6. 7l motor. It requires the new CJ-4 oil that is just a little more expensive than the CI-4 oils. Other than that, I am not sure what else there is. Check out the 6. 7l forum.

Well, just so you all know, I just got a flyer from my local Cummins dealer (Cummins Metropower in NYC,) advertizing a "SPECIAL" price of $225 for an oil/fuel filter service on any Cummins B series, $285 for any Cummins C series... Add "ONLY" $190 for a valve adjustment if you get it done at the same time as the oil change.

Yeah... . ok... . sure... .

I really wonder if ANYONE takes them up on these "DEALS. "

I am my own service station.

Kompressor,

The new oil is API Rated, CJ-4. It is designed for the new diesels that will have to use ULSD & have all kinds of emissions equipment, on them, like particulate traps, EGR valves, Catalytic Convertors, etc. Those engines HAVE to use the new oils because they have much less sulphur, etc. , in them. The new oils are "backwards compatible", which means that they can be used in older diesels, also. The CJ-4 may be all that you will be able to fine, easily, now.

I just bought a case ( 6 gallon jugs, enough for two oil changes) of Chevron Delo-400, 15X40, CI-4+, at Costco for $54. 29, to give you an idea of what oil costs if you do the oil changes, yourself.

The dealer may have included a fuel filter change, in that price. Some of the dealers are getting over $100. 00 for that change. I, recently, paid $16. 65 for the FS 19800-E (7 micron) fuel filter at Cummins Rocky Mountain, here in Phoenix. And, I think I may have overpaid, for it. At any rate, learn how to change the fuel filter, yourself. It's quite easy & you can save yourself a lot of money. Besides, if you are on the road & plug a filter, you can change it on the side of the road & be on your way, again. No tow truck & dealer costs. If your old filter isn't plugged-up completely, save it & keep it in your truck & if you get a load of bad (dirty) fuel, stick the old filter in til it gets plugged & then install a new one.

BTW, the LF-16035 (oil filter) was $14. 28.

You can probably find them even cheaper.

I finally found a place here in Raleigh that has the Mobil 1 Turbo-Diesel and bought 5 gallons - all in 1 quart bottles. Why would they put diesel oil in 1 quart bottles to begin with? I would sure prefer 1 gallon jugs or 5 gallon pails.

The dealer price (list) is about $30 per gallon for the 6. 7:eek: It looks like we will be buying outside the system
