Can I use Smarty...

1st Gen NV4500 Conversion: Automatic

Looks like everyone has it figured out now:) .

I can't wait to see if they really get one working for us. I still have my stock gasket and would rather try this before going through the o-ring hassle and retorquing hassle with it. I am babying it but with the silver 62 and my set up I could blow it on command. I got the wastegate set right at 40 for now. No need to fix it any earlier than I have to.

I tried an experimental setup from haisleys a few years ago. It involved a waterjetted stock gasket(same one they use for fire rings) and a flexible ring, it was a spring encapsolated in a metal jacket. It lasted for about 3000 miles. Truck is now fireringed, and has about 13K on it.

if the machine shop machines your head right, there should be no difference in valve to piston clearance. Good shops will machine the valves back into the head to compensate when was decked off the surface.

Call me thick-headed

As BILLVO said it's a flat head, and shaving them doesn't increase the compression...

Geez, I feel so stupid sometimes (like now). I just realized what BILLVO was saying. Makes perfect sense to me now.

24 V not 12V

I called today to get my name on a list and the nice tech told me they were making gaskets for the 24V first and then if they worked well they would make them for the 12V. :{ :{

I'm bummed!

Cometic gaskets were first used by the high hp/high boost import cars. They also have became a favorite of the Dirt racers-410 sprints, late model and DIRT Modifieds where they usually tear down after about every 7-10 races because they can be reused,if they have not been compromised. They are also used by most all of the fast SS/A-SS/AA Hemi crowd also for that reason also. Where most would only get one use out of a good set of aftermarket gaskets the Cometic have helped lower costs because of their ability to be reused.

A while back I inquired about them for our trucks and was given a resounding "NO WAY" and "Not cost effective due to needing a different machine to make the inline 6 gaskets". Then they tried the split gasket and it was a bust and never sealed for our trucks. When checking back with them we were told that they,Cometic, had made a piece to adapt their current machinery to make the inline 6 style gaskets. This is what they mean when they now say they are soon ready. Last I had heard they were on the street doing some testing and could be released later this year.

One thing I will offer those here, from past experiences, once they have hit the street those who buy them must keep in mind they are not a cure all for what ails you. Meaning,ANY headgasket will fail under the right cylinder pressures and it could also be a Cometic that does this. Just because you buy them it does not mean your headgasket will never fail. I have seen them fail in other applications with high cylinder pressures from big alcohol pills and heaps of timing.

Are they a great product, certainly in the applications where I have used them or seen them used. Are they a cure all for those who do not wish to o-ring or fire ring,I would say no as the only way to lower your chances for headgasket failure in our trucks is sealing the combustion chamber with proper rings, good head studs and proper torque down procedures.

I have used this as a example before and do it again here. .

While in the midst of his back to back championship years as a DHRA puller,Sled Pullers truck had only o-rings and new head bolts when it was assembled. It seen way more boost than most any of our street rides will see and never failed. When it was sold the motor was still intact and being used by the new owner on the DHRA circuit. Its just goes to show that proper preparation and torque procedures mean more than fancy trick parts... ... ... . Andy

You may have heard this song already, but keep in mind. . .

If your stock gasket is still in good shape, there is no reason you can't keep it together with your setup. A good set of studs and proper retorques, can be quite capable. We have run 60 + lbs of boost with all the nitrous we could throw at it on a 2001 with 170,000 plus miles on original HG. , with only a set of studs. Certaily had a ton of drive pressure as well. This isn't to say there are any guarantees, but you can often get away with quite a bit with just studs. If the stock gasket is already hurt, then forget it.

Back on topic. . . this new gasket sounds interesting.

Thats not what they told me. I was told they would both be available on the same date.

I though I posted this already???

I talked to them last week and they said they were being tested. The person I talked to said about $500 + for the phuzion and about half of that for the MLS. Then they said they did not recommend re-using either of them. I lost interest at that point.

My friend who initially contacted Cometic about these for the 12-valve talked to them just a few weeks ago. The word he got was that they were only going to do them for the overly-valved Rammers. Too bad.

Yeah, F that. I aint payin 500$ for one of them suckers.

Its odd how depending on who you talk to you get different stories... Last time I talked to them they said the 24V and 12V would be released at the same date???

Guess I'll just stick with a marine HG for now.

D%$N I could buy 3 sets for my small block MOPAR at that price!! And not reusable?? Thats a bunch off S$#T at that price, they can keep'em as far as I'm concerned! #@$%!

I just spoke with Kevin at Cometic and will be ordering the MLS gasket for $249, the Phuzion gasket is different than the MLS.
