Since the Edge came off I am averaging 20mpg where with the edge I was only getting 15. I have no idea why the milage increased so much without the tuner but these mods on a otherwise stock engine I am running 550 plus on a single tank. Happy Motoring.
You have to consider that pressure boxes raise rail pressure all the time. That takes more energy to pump fuel, and then to dump it into the engine at a higher pressure. Bosch claims very high horsepower (I think more than 16 hp) is wasted by the injection pump at peak pressure.
The reason why they raised rail pressure was not for economy, it was for particulate emissions. It does improve fuel economy a little, maybe 0. 3 % due to better atomization and faster combustion (effectively advancing timing), but if it takes an extra 5 hp at freeway cruise, it may not be worth it. Also, some people think that as long as you don't exceed max pressure, there are no ill effects from highre pressure. Materials have an exponential life curve, meaning that if you double stress, the life will be reduced by the fourth power, or by 16. SO, if the injection system was planned to go one million miles at 15000 psi, staying at 25000 all the time would cut the life expectancy to 130K.
Honed injectors have the opposite effect. They let in more fuel at any pressure, so the ECM thinks that you are driving real easy, which causes the pressure to be lowered even more, and the timing to be advanced slightly (that depends, I can't say that for all model years/flashes).
You get slightly poorer atomization, which is still way better than the classic diesel (12 V, and vp44). I don't think you really lose any efficiency in going from 15000 psi to 12000 (as compared to the old 4000) due to poorer atomization, but the pump will use maybe 25% less energy (than stock) to pump at the lower pressure. This, plus the faster injection (which effectively advances timing) and the shorter duration to run at the same load, results in better MPG. I get about 0. 5 mpg better, and I accelerate about 25% faster at all stoplights than before, and I shift at lower rpm since it now has more hp at 2000 than it had at 3000.
Also, the life expectancy of all injection parts will be greatly increased, perhaps more than doubled, due to the lower pressure.
