Stuck in 1st gear with Smarty

So I tow at about 26 GCVW all the time, or maybe 50% of the time ... but anyways I tow a load alot of the time, Im going to need tires sooner then latter, and I like the idea of 19. 5 for the added capasity, and the fact they last longer then 40K miles. but I have been thinking of of a little more power, while towing, especially on hilly streets, Reverse, and up some of the steep highways and the fact of the matter in WA state top speed on most of the roads is about 60-65 MPH 70 on some stretchs but let face it I tow most of the time so Im still regulated to 60MPH. SO I have been thinking of switching to the 4. 10 gears and 19. 5, 19. 5 might be a little taller then stock bringing my finial ratio between the current 3. 73 and 4. 10.

Has anybody done this?

Anybody have some 4. 10 gears for cheap?

Advice?

Thanks

I think you are looking in the right direction. Somewhere on the site you can find revolutions per mile for the tires and then calculate the RPM at a given speed. That way you can truly compare the impact of the gear ratio change and the larger diameter tires.

If I can run 70-75 when I'm loaded, I'm in my sweet spot for power and EGTs. I certainly would not want to just go to the larger wheel/tires without a gear change.

I'm glad I don't have too many times I have to live with a 60 MPH speed limit!

I lost mileage when I put the 245's on. I'm down to 225's now and the mileage didn't go back up. Don't think your going to get better mileage with the 19. 5's. If you're running 60mph a lot when loaded, keep the 3. 73's, run the 245's and tow in 5th. If I had 3. 73's that's what I'd do.

ANy idea why your millage didnt' go back up? seems odd to me ... or are you saying you had the 17 rims went to 245 on 19. 5 and now your running 19. 5 with 225, but still lost your millage.

Im also looking for a little more grunt then what first gear provides, and especially in Reverse backing up hill, with a load sucks, I would really love to have a lower geared reverse IE slower speed I dont' need to haul but in R...

These are deffenatly not must have's but its more of an idea, I know I don't want any taller tires without a lower finial gear ratio so maybe ill get skinny 19. 5, stay with stock or taller 19. 5 with 4. 10 gears.

... . I would really love to find someone who has a 6sped and 4. 10 gears. just to see how well or slow it drives Oo.

The RPM idea is a good idea and I think I'll look into that.

Anybody have opinions on tread options for 19. 5 tires they like or really hate? I do mostly highway, and construction site driving.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone.
