I have a brand new '07 with a 6 speed manual. I was surpised when I looked under the truck and saw a great big aluminim case transmission. The bell housing and transmission case is all one piece. There are PTO covers on both sides. I am used to the New Venture ones that had a cast iron case.

I am very curious about who makes this transmission. I have heard some people refer to it as "MB6" or something like that.

By the way, this 6 speed is very nice. The shift pattern is very precise and well defined. Reverse is in a good spot, all the way to the left and down.

Thanks,

Sean

it's a getrag ...

no it's an eaton fuller ...

no it's a joint venture between eaton and mercedes made in brazil ...

good luck, i'd like to know as well but i have yet to see anyone give a reference or link to support their claims ...

and i am not referring to anyones post above ... just voicing frustration about what has always been a simple question in the past:

getrag ... nv4500 ... nv5600 ... 727 ... 518 ... 47rh ... 47re ... 48re

so i hope someone comes along and proves me wrong with a good reference or link ...

? 6speed

It isn't a Getrag, and it is made in Brazil and used in medium duty trucks throughout South America. TDR issue 53 I think.

Read the TDR magazine, its an MB medium duty truck transmission. It is built in Brazil by a coalition of transmission companies.

Actually, I don't like reverse in that spot at all. It's too close to an "easy mistake" low forward gear - being 2nd.

There's been more than a couple of times when I though I was about to back up, only to find out I'm heading forward and vice versa.

I prefer it being next to a high gear like 5th or 6th, where if it's accidentally in the wrong spot, you're not going to lurch the wrong direction.

Here's my 2cents...

I drove a buddy's '01 6 speed (NV5600) and reverse was all the way up to the right. I actually ground a bit in reverse looking for 5th. I thought he was going to kill me but instead he just laughed. He said it took him a long time to get used to it and was surprised he hadn't broke something yet.

With this new transmission, at least mine, the spring to get to reverse is quite strong. To me, anyway, it is obvious which gear I am heading for. At least when you are looking for 2nd or reverse you are either stopped or going very slowly, not like going from 4th to reverse!

When comparing the two, in my opinion, the newer one is less error prone.

Just remember there are possibly more than one "G56"... the one we have is either underated or a different model... most of the listings I have seen rated it at 450lb-ft of torque (input)...

I was told by a DC regional rep that the G56 was being built in a Dana plant with parts being supplied by Getrag. But as we all know, they don't know much... :-laf

Yes, but you really have to not be paying attention. The detent into 2d is light, but obvious. The detent into Reverse is relatively strong.

Maybe, but all I know is that in 1. 5 months of ownership, it's happened to me on 5 occassions now, where I've just about lurched into the curb instead of going backwards.
In 7 years of ownership of my 5 speed, not a single occurence. I may have missed it for 4th, but I'm not going anywhere in 4th from a standstill.

My wife just about drove through the garage wall making the same mistake on my 07.
