My friend did the "stupid" out of park alarm recall a while a go. The truck rolled back today when he was out of the truck and smashed up the back of his truck. I asked him to go back in his truck and start it and put in reverse and open up the door , he said no horn sounded. What do you think ? Case or no Case and how should he proceed?

Just playing devils advocate here for a bit. Where would your friend be if he did not have the alarm BS recall done? One could say that he should have paid closer attention to what he was doing. Just like when people come into a dealer and complain because their seat heaters don't keep their ***** warm or the heated/cooled cup holder does not work anymore!! CRY CRY CRY. Things get more technical in the new vehicles these days and people forget that just a few years ago we did not have it and complain like they just got shot when something does not work or jump to blame someone for their mistake when an alarm does not work. People rely on an electrical device to save their butts but it could have been avoided if he were paying closer attention. Ok, back to normal. Sorry if I offended anyone. !! LOL Just me . 02 worth.

Case against who or what? Objects in the path of his truck that caused the damage? DC?

It sounds like he got out without putting it in PARK and setting the brake. Is that supposed to be somebody elses fault?

Um... . Lets see, he had the recall done so he was aware of a potential out of park issue and he still didn’t use the parking brake? Case? Your kidding right?

So what’s next? Dodge should make it impossible to open the door and exit the vehicle unless it is in park, the parking brake is engaged, the wheels are chocked, the sun is out and the temperature is above freezing (to eliminate the possibility of sliding on any ice)??

You know this was a chicken crap fix for a major problem.

That would work

I guess I am ignorant in regards to this recall. I was under the impression that once you put it into park and opened the door your horn would sound to tell you that it's not all the way in.

The only thing he will be able to do is to take it in and see if the park pawl is working. did he actually have it in park? Again, sometimes some people just need to accept that they messed up. IF it actually was a REAL problem with the truck then DC would be responsible if not then they are going to tell him to PACK SAND. People make mistakes all the time and try to blame others or the machine and not take responsibility to THEIR error.

There are many conditions that must be met for the horn to sound and lights to flash. Movement is a MUST. The controllers see the gear position but it will not do anything if there is no movement... ... ... ... . it's pupose is not just to be annoying:-laf

I always use the ebrake. Well 98% of the time. I recommend everyone do the same. Yea I think your buddy should just deal with the insurance co. , its really his own fault.

I guess i'm with p-bar, you pay money for something you expect it to work. I also thought that the vehicle not being completely in park was the puropose of the recall.

I assume the engine was running and it got into reverse. This has been a common problem to a lot of vehicles-- People have gotten lazy and think an automatic is supposed to keep the vehicle in place. The interlock with the brake is a help, but human error, gravity, pets, kids, failed linkage, etc. can send a vehicle in motion.

If I park mine (manual) on a hill and don't set the brake, whose fault is when it rolls into something?

Quotes from the owners manual: said:
“P” Park

This gear position supplements the parking brake by locking the transmission. .....

..... Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle in this range. ...

... ... Always apply the parking brake first, then place the selector in Park position. On 4-wheel drive vehicles be sure the transfer case is in a drive position!
... .

Two separate warnings in the owners manual: said:
WARNING!

Your vehicle could move and injure you and others if it is not completely in P (Park). Check by trying to move the gearshift lever back and forth without first pulling it toward you after you have set it in P. Make sure it is in Park before leaving the vehicle.

WARNING!

Never use Park position on an automatic transmission as a substitute for the parking brake. Always apply parking brake fully when parked to guard against vehicle movement and possible injury or damage
.

Now what are the odds your buddy paid any heed to these instructions and warnings? Did he have the parking brake on?

A vehicle is just a machine that needs to be operated correctly. Ahh... but who reads instructions now a days?

Don't forget the American dream of living on EZ street at someone elses expense because YOU didn't pay attention to what YOU were doing. And YOU wonder why insurance premiums keep going up. Mike

Thanks for copy and past..... Why people get out of a running vehicle with the brake not set is beyond me. (some go further with it not running, but the run after the vehicle is a real workout) It is drummed into our heads at driving school to set the brake.

Finally, some factual and intresting information on this topic from NHTSA (for those impatient types jump to page 8. Note in the end of the report: “ODI notes that following these simple, common sense, procedures would have prevented the SV rollaway incidents and the injuries and damages that resulted”)

It appears us older types have a problem with the shifter?!
