Gary, didn't you mention that you might try the Frantz element. I'm about out of Scott rolls and just wondering if you have anything to report.

Thanks, RJR

I have one installed now, but not enough miles for an analysis run. Looks promising, made a couple of slight mods for (hopefully!) improved efficiency - will post results when that time rolls around...

Gary, thanks for the reply, I've been out of town on a pipe job, no computer, hence the late responce.

So how did was the element fit? My expectation is that the factory spec roll should fit with no need to do the custom fitting the Scott paper requires.

Also, looking forward to your test results. I'm currently running 10 to 15k, test results always come back saying fine for additional miles. I'm thinking of going to 20k on this change.

My 12v tends to dirty the oil fairly fast, I'm changing elements at 2k.

Actually, the fit of the Frantz supplied element was one of my concerns. The roll is dense enough, but I prefer a slightly tighter fit into the canister than it provides for best sealing and filtering. SO, I took a 1 and a half turn of added blue shop towel (the paper stuff you buy on a roll), and carefully folded back the top inch for added thickness at the top edge, and tightly wound that around the outside of the Frantz cartridge. This provides enough added diameter to the cartridge for the extra snug fit I prefer, with an even tighter band around the top inch or so where the fold is in the added layer.

Yeah, I know, overkill - but it's just the way I do some things... ;) :-laf

The last 2 oil analysis have been done while using the frantz supplied elements. Received good results. I buy elements a case at a time and use one roll as an adder for the others. Before installing an element I just wind some more paper on to tighten up the fit (reel-to-reel tape style). . They work fine with some addon paper.

Good idea!

They are a bit smaller/looser diameter than I prefer too...

Improved filtration ?

Gary I like your idea of the blue towels. Have been wanting to ask you. Scott seems to now be softer than in the past and I see it is RV safe. My dad used to sell these in the 50's and they reccomended cheap strong paper for a choice. My question is... . Has anyone tried other rolls for comparison. What I am wanting to try is... . at the Janatorial supply stores they sell an inexpensive roll feels hard to the touch and sturdier to tear. ( not good on the bottom, actually hurts ) Being a denser sheet and tougher could it actually filter better ? I also like the ready made rolls but felt they were a little loose to suit me. Dad used to sell 3 stackers to use on the big diesel trucks, etc. Also, anyone know for sure Spinners actually do keep the soot out of the oil, might add one in front of the Frantz. ? Thanks for your good coverage of this subject. The 1/16 inch hole is a new idea to me and sounds good. Is there a thread covering this subject ?

I have switched over totally to the Frantz rolls - price per cartridge change is still trivial, compared to OEM or competing spin-on types - and THEY typically are down on filtration capabilities in every oil analysis I have seen.

The "Spinner" type filters seem to have been a disappointment to most users I have seen posting - at least those who back up seat-of-pants, purely visual impressions with actual analysis results.

Seems most Spinner users are most impressed by the visual accumulations seen when servicing the Spinners - but fail to realize that there is that much, and MORE accumulation in a decent competing TP or paper towel cartridge type bypass filter - you just don't SEE it as easily as in the Spinners - until you do an oil analysis - then the difference becomes obvious!

As far as my own usage and test analysis using the Frantz TP cartridges, I'm on a annual oil change interval, so won't have results available until late Fall, when the next change is due. I fully anticipate a good report - but that expectation is tempered by the fact that, unlike previously posted analysis reports from past times and miles while still living in California, we're now in a relatively remote area of eastern Oregon.

I drive the truck far less miles - and a much higher percentage of those miles are short haul local driving - and virtually NO Winter driving to speak of, since ice and snow require a 4x4 vehicle, and my truck is a 4x2. Added to all that, is the larger injectors - nice for power, but bad for soot...

BUT, good or bad - I'll post results in about 4 more months - after 12 months and about 12K miles on the oil. :)
