Only in Alaska...

Any Locksmiths in the house?

What the???

OK.

Not to hijack this thread but what the ???

Between post 47 and 48 there is a FIVE and a HALF year time lapse? Was this thread dormant for that long? And who found it to resurrect it?

Also, post 19. Member Archive has 52,XXX posts? And he still has time to fly? Wow.

I am sure there is an explanation for this. I had a bit to drink last night but not that much!

For the record, lapsed student. C172. About 75 hours. Married, kids, house. You know the drill.

Hemi Dart resurrected it - yes, it hadn't had a post in 5 1/2 year. User Archive was created to solve a problem where a previous webmaster had removed a bunch of posts (50,000+) prior to a certain date as a temporary solution to a systems problem that was causing the site to crash. When I took over and got the site stable I brought them back but the user numbers had changed in the mean time so there was no way to bring them back under the proper user names. There have been a couple users since that time that for one reason or another (death is one that comes to mind) it was requested that their name be removed. If that happens (it's only happened a couple times that I can recall) we place all those posts under the archive username. Make sense?

I don't fly 'em, ... just fixed them, engineered systems for them, and now certifying avionics so that the pilot's can break them.

Mr. St L. ,

Thanks for the response. Kinda blew my mind when I saw it. I mean, how long would it take someone to have 52k posts? Boggles the mind!

As for a 5 1/2 year dormancy, how would someone even find it? I guess using a search feature and stumbling upon it.

Pretty cool either way.

Thanks for the info.

Jengle,

My 175 converted to conventional gear looks like an early 180. So much so I call up ATC and call myself a Skywagon to avoid confusion.

A 185 with the TIO-520 (Piper Navajo) engine is the machine to have. Surprised to see no one has made a viable turbine conversion for one yet.

I noticed you have flown a 210. Only reason I mentioned it is that I just finished up helping a buddy do an annual on a 210. Thank god it wasn't a turbo 210. Those things are a mechanics PITA, not to mention a wimpy version of the 206. No room, weak gear legs ect.

If you find yourself in AK look me up. I'll take you up flying.

Steve,

If I have a question or picture, I like to search and find a thread related to the subject and just bring it back up. I don't like starting new threads unless absolutely neccessary.

I learned in a T-Craft as a kid, and have flown in Alaska ever since. I flew T-28 and Beavers for the State of Alaska (DNR, fire fighting, lead plane, air attack. Most of my time (12,000+) is bush type (Cubs, Beavers, C185, etc).

I flew out of Jackson Wyoming for several months (over a several year period)

for a friend (he was killed in 95 while flying a grizzly survey in the park). I enjoyed seeing a different part of the country!!

Retired helicopter pilot

Almost 30 years in aviation. Vietnam heli-pilot (101st, A Co. 158th AVN, Ghostriders), 15,000 hrs in commercial flying in the Rockies, AK, west coast mostly energy exploration, firefighting, construction, heli-ski, logging. Engine failure accident ended my career 11 years ago with a broken back, spinal cord injury. Nothing beats defying gravity and breaking the surly bonds of earth.
Earthbound misfit-ChuckOo.

Was that while logging? Pretty tough to auto successfully with a tree hanging from a long line and zero airspeed I'd think. That's the one thing in aviation that I wouldn't want to try.

Yeah it was while logging in a single engine ship but, a sling load is a sling load, doesn't really matter if it's a log or a bucket full of water or cement or if it's something else. You can pickle the load, it's just what kind of room and rotor rpm you have at that pt. If you're going do fly sling loads you're going to spend alot of time on the bad side of the height/velocity curve. In the heli business you don't get paid very much unless you're willing to do some of the stuff that involves some added risk. That's where I found myself in my mid forties looking for a way to break into the twin-engine logging market (S-61's in AK, etc) so I could make some money before I was too old to do anything. I loved the work... being an aerial crane so to speak... no passengers to worry about... set your own schedule... fly 8-9 hrs a day... two weeks on two weeks off. Just wish the impeller had held together alittle longer. The utility helicopter business is not for everyone who wants to fly... but I enjoyed the work alot.

A few years ago when I was working on my heli ticket AOPA (I think) ran an article about heli logging. I showed it to my girlfriend, telling her that I'd love to do that sort of thing once I got my licence (for the same resons you listed). She read the article, and also saw the little paragraph at the end (that I had missed) that said that the pilot they interviewed had died before the story ran due to some sort of mechanical failure while logging. Uh, whoops, you weren't supposed to read that part...

It turned out to be a moot point, since I bought a house and gave up the heli thing. That was some of the most fun I've had flying, though.
