i restacked the clutch plates in my LSD about 2500 miles ago and refilled with synthetic gear oil. for the first 300-500 miles it was fine. then it started to make a lot of noise when turning. i added some friction modifier which seemed to help a little, but it is still doing it and seemingly getting a bit worse. questions are this:

1 with the noise, are the clutch plates experiencing abnormal wear, or grinding themselves up?

2 is there a balance to the friction modifier at which the oil and clutches are so slippery that the restack is ineffective?

3 should i just add more modifer until it quites making noise?

4 or, is this common and don't worry about it. (i would hate to tear something up or cause major premature failure. )

I have the same problem. I installed an Eaton lsd unit and filled it up with amsoil and within a few weeks it was grinding hard in corners so I reclutched it and called eaton about this and they claim same problems with GM. Gm uses synthetic from the factory and eaton R&D has not yet kept up with the times and the clutch material used isn't real compatible with synthetics. I called amsoil and told them of the problem also. They said not to use the severe gear but to use regular 80w90 synthetic instead. But that was after filling it with severe gear again. When I reclutched it they looked like brand new. I pulled it out after a few thousand again due to a bearing failing on the carrier and looked at them and still looked like new. So I have been driving it like this for a couple years and no problems. Just need to put up with the noise while cornering.

How hard is it to get the diff out of the carrier? you dont have to spread the carrier do you?

I think you mean get the carrier out of the case.

I just use a prybar and hook it in the opening of the carrier and pry it straight out using bottom of case to pry against. If you keep it coming straight out and do not cock it it comes out easily. Same goes for install keeping it straight really helps so the races don't cock on it.
