First impressions of the Dodge: 1 ton dually quad cab 6 speed auto

Looks the same (duuh). If you don't get the fugly "painted wood" dash crap, it's nice looking inside as well. Simple, yet effective.

Motor is freakishly quite. No "diesel" noise. And you have to listen very hard and press on that throttle really hard to get any turbo whistle.

Ride is fabulous! No squeaks, no jarring. Had the truck up to 80mph and in the city.

Trans shifts smooth and firm when required! Tho, I don't recall ever getting into "6th". The torque converter lockup that happens in my buddies new 06 doesn't show. it just shifts and goes.

Motor warm up. The motor defiantly de-fuels a lot until she's all comfy and warmed up. Once we got in the city there is ZERO turbo lag. Hit the accelerator and GO! :)

The exhaust break is just wild. No high idle to keep warm, the truck just engages the exhaust break for you! The only odd ball sound you get is the break. that's it.

Exhaust pipe. sounds like blowing though a straw, ZERO noise.

Exhaust smell. What smell?

Acceleration, Slower, once moving it I think a 4 speed auto in an 06 would walk the 6. 7 based on the seat of the pants 1/4 drag calculator.

Sales man: He was learning from me and my friend as he admitted he knew little and only done a few training courses on the new truck. He was honest and not a BullPooper. I like that big time (Denny Hecker dodge off of i-35W sound of 694 in MSP)

First impressions of the Ford: 3/4 ton SINGLE wheel quad cab auto (5 speed?)

Luxury. heh. for 55,000 I was shocked I didn't have a capachino nozzel on the dash for my morning coffee! We all know the Fords are over priced.

Motor. for being common rail, sounds a lot like a quieter 6. 0. Still sounds like a bucket of bolts in the 17 degree morning. It did however start and not stall on the first try. So apparently they are improving the PowerStroke.

Ride. It's a ford. it rides like CRAP! Not as bad as the last generation with the 6. 0's. Pot holes still sent the suspension flopping around on the highway.

Trans kept the motor in the higher RPM's. I couldn't get the motor to run past 3200rpm. Tho the sales man never let us go very far and we never warmed it up. BTW. we took the dodge down 35W, around U of M and back. good long ride!

Boost gauge on the dash showed about 30psi. No coolant squirting out under the hood! More improvements! :)

No exhaust break. But I still think it's neat they have the AUX switches and built in trailer brake.

Exhaust, STINKY TRUCK! wow does it stink. I'd rather be in the same room as my cat after it filled up it's litter box.

Exhaust sound, loud compared to the 6. 7. No flames :( I didn't bring hot dogs anyways. No loss

acceleration, I'd like to see the 6. 7 and the 6. 4 heads up some day.

Steering wheel. it's like 10 turns lock to lock. What's up with that? Still has crap for turning radius

Sales man: Freaking idiot. "This motor is bullet proof, best one in the industry!" This motor has no experience yet, the Cummins 6. 7 has been in production in the dodge Chassis cab for 8+ month and who know how long in Europe in other applications, I tell the sales man.

This motor already has an issue with flaming tail pipes! He was unaware of any issues. I told him every dealer in the country had to halt sales until a computer reflash was done not to long ago.

There was more, but his accent and the loud idling 6. 4 it was hard to talk.

The Dodge truck is just NICE. I'd actually consider this 6. 7 and 6 speed auto. I've been a manual fan my entire life, and for a truck, this would do.

The Ford. Bleh, Yuppies? sure.

Forgot the best part! The drive shaft is a huge one piece aluminum! Is that transfer case the same as the 5. 9's? Wonder if that drive shaft would drop right in on my truck (assuming is costs less then to make a custom one). Assuming new yolks installed as well.

Cool! I hear ya on the exhaust brake. I drove an CC/Aisin the other day and the EB is SWEET! The exhaust smells like warm air. Kinda weird but impressive. I want to drive a pickup when I can find one on the lot to try out a 68RFE.

I have been meaning to test drive a 6. 7 liter but haven't had time. I am wondering if the 6. 7 is even quieter then the 5. 9 in my 2005? I'll keep my good ole 92 so I can always hear the sweet music of a Cummins:-laf

Yes the 6. 7 is quieter then any 5. 9, including 06's.

Dodge price tag was around 45,000 if I'm not mistaken. and had the navigation radio.

Yes, quieter but I also don't think you'll be able to hear much Cummins music through the DPF either. #@$%!

I like said, like blowing though a straw, just air noise.

The ages of the diesel rattle sound is just about gone. the 3rd gen's had a little rattle in them. the 6. 7's have just about nothing. If you want a rattle, get a ford :) Not sure about the chubby's, might find one of them in the coming days for kicks.

GM uses an aluminum driveshaft as well. Seen those snap like a carrot in sled pulls. :-laf

The new Cummins engines are WAY to quiet for me. :( The rattle is half of the enjoyment of the diesels, at least for me. :D Same goes for the large truck engines. My ISX Cummins only sounds like a REAL diesel when started cold in the morning. Sounds more like a N14 at idle then. Oo.

I sure dislike the 2-piece driveshaft in my truck - once the center support bushings get loose, backing a load like our 5er with an aggressive aftermarket clutch often delivers lots of clutch/driveline chatter due to the "rubber band" driveline wrap-up - and before someone jumps all over my LUK clutch, I'm well aware my complaint is shared by MANY RVers using a wide variety of competing clutches... ;)

I to enjoy the sound of a vp or p-pump motor. But you can't deny the technology that took all that sound away, rather amazing and sad at the same time.

Even in a drag race I'm sure a 10th or 2 could be shaved of with a one piece shaft. I'm for sure going to look into that vs. a re-balance and new u-joints. I'm rather sick of the shudder from a stand still if I don't go super slow to start.

Good to know I am not the only one who hates that. I have already replaced one ds and under 50k miles at that. They denied warranty on it due to the edge and all the other goodies under the hood. Cost was like 510. 00 for a new one thru local dodge dealer.

I wouldn't mind having it back, if it came with an on/off switch. Having driven the bigger stuff, the old-school diesel noise can wear on you after a long day.

There's still some sound in e'm... . watch the video of the 6. 7l burnout posted a few days ago on you tube... . truck sounded nice putting down the power.

When you said you think an 06 4spd would pull the 6. 7l once moving... . are you sure it wasnt just the 6. 7l being smooth? (deceptively fast?)..... i'll use the dirtbike analagy... a 2 stroke makes you feel like you're going mach 5 as you feel / hear the violence... . but it'll get spanked by a 4 stroke (which is comparitively smooth)...

It just didn't feel as fast as my friends 06 on the highway accelerating. Tho, it only had 21 miles on the motor. :)

At least I let the motor warm up before getting up to 80mph. You think the multiple starts and stops and idle time these things go though for the first miles just to get the dealership does much worse damage then my one trip up to 80 right?

BTW, Brand new BMW 325. The factory suggested to my parents keeping it under 130mph for the first 100 or so miles when they took delivery in Germany. I would expect even a cummins motor to be perfectly fine up to 80mph for a short period of time during break in.

I had mine up to 80mph, down to 55mph, back up to 80mph, on it's first 300 mile trip home with 27 miles on the OD. It's perfectly fine 79,000 miles later.
