Hi Everyone

Looking for help. Need information on transmission coolers. What kind have you installed on your truck? What benifit did it give you?How much did it cost?Who was the manufacture and would you recommend them?I have done a few searches and havent come up with much.

Thanks

Mike

i had to get a new one with my trans upgrade the stock ones clog easy and arent good for heat . get the best you can fit in there be carefull as the hood latch sticks-out. far as brands highest btu rating u can fit . if u dont have ac much easier. prices should run 80-200 bucks. hope this helps!:)

I think where you drive has a lot to do with it. If you drive off-road alot or where rocks kick up then i would go with a B&M cooler. Their fins are thicker and stronger and wont bend, break, or fold over like the thinner aluminum ones. I ran just a B&M cooler (no radiator cooler) in my 467HP dart and the temps never got too high. I've seen some off road truck with the thin finned coolers and the fins are folded over and dont let much if any air through.

If you tow a lot and want the ease of mind get a cooler with a thermostatic fan on it. A B&M or BeCool probably run between 150-215... I think.

If your torque converter stays locked up, you will not have temp issues. In stop and go traffic, take it out of gear when stopped. SNOKING

Super Cooler

Y Not ,I have called the number listed on your web site but havent received a call back. I am interesed in buying a Super Cooler but I have a few questions.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Mike

I got one from Jasper engine & transmission. Not cheap but normal temps run 130-150. Hard thrashing raises it about 50* or so. Not sure who makes it but it's very efficient. the hose leaving the cooler is always air temp. Just my experience with my truck!

Do the 1 1/2" thick EMPI coolers fit in the stock space as a replacement, or do you mount them elsewhere? If they aren't too thick, I think you could fit two of the big ones. I'd be interested in finding the largest cooler that fits in the stock space.

Here's the link for the Jasper coolers (they are on the 2nd page):

Anyone know which of these would fit an '06?

The SuperCooler sounds nice, but it's out of my budget for protecting the trans. At that price I'd rather let the trans blow and replace it with a built one.

I mounted mine if front of the whole works... in addition to the factory cooler. Mounted in the center rite under the hood latch. Takes a little time to mount it so it don't hit the hood when it's shut. Don't know how it would work on newer truck. Let us know what you do!!

I've got a Spearco intercooler installed. The things are huge. Whatever I do will have to be in the stock space. There's absolutely no room in front of the intercooler.

I found this one a while back and am considering it. It is not too expensive and seems well made.

Hey Dave... take a look ay TDR member Y-Nots trans coolers, they are without a doubt the finest assembly I have seen. They come with everything needed to install them, even the tubing cutter! I bought one only to find out that it would not fit under my truck due to my Transfer Flow 54 gallon OEM replacement tank. Dave was gracious enough to allow me to return it even though it was my boneheaded mistake for not checking to see if it would work. As soon as he gets a mount fabricated that will allow mounting of the cooler outboard of the frame rail on the drivers side ( just in front of my FASS ) I will be purchasing another one!

I wanted to bring this to the top again as this is on my list of 'to do' items before this summers vacation trip.

Anyone out there install a remote trans cooler? The B&M, Hayden, and Derale look like they would be the ticket. With a bracket designed like TDR member Y-Knot's to fit outboard of the drivers side frame rail.

Dave's Super Cooler design is excellant and it come with everything needed to make the install. I am just not sure that the SC-110 systems hoses are long enough to run between the body and frame in order to mount the cooler outboard of the frame.

I am interested in any and all imput on this.

Dave

Again, I have to say that if you keep the TC locked when pulling grades and do not idle in gear, the factory coolers work fine. What is the issue that you are trying to address? SNOKING

There have been times when I have had the truck in 3rd direct and have seen in excess of 200°, I am sure that isn't to high but don't want it getting any hotter either. I was pulling my fiver over the bridge between Washington and Oregon outside of Longview a couple of years ago and got stuck behind a bike race. By the time I got to the apex of the bridge my trans temp was at 230°! I didn't have my second gear lockup swith installed then either so I was cooking the trans.

The remote cooler is for my own piece of mind, the cost is minimal enough to justify the extra insurance.

Is that pan temp or output line. BIG difference. Output line can go to low 300 ok. Pan 200+ not that good on the fluid/transmission. SNOKING

I have been considering a bigger trans cooler for our auto, have some hills here, pretty steep, when pulling them loaded (~25k combined weight) and because of the location I am usually only going 15-20mph so lockup isnt engaging. Will see 230* pulling these hills (output line) and that is with an ambient air temp of 25*F, seems a little toasty.

Use a good synthetic fluid and do not worry about it. Like I said, high temps at the output line for a short period are not a big issue. With more coolers, you will see the same high temps there. I have a probe in both the pan and output. In situations like that, spotting a trailer or freeway stop and go, the output line will climb fast, but my pan temp remains low.

If the output starts going pass 300 stop what you are doing and cool it down. Buy another probe and put a switch between the two and you will see what I am talking about. The real damage to an auto is when the whole transmission goes above 230 or so. Like I said, use a good synthetic and enjoy. Call Dave or Bill and see if they agree. BTW way, the warmest I have every seen my pan was in the SW in 100 degree weather pulling hard in 3rd for 15 miles up a long grade, and it when to 170.
