GETTING THIS WEIRD SOUND AT 60 - 65 MPH , IT DOESN'T DO IT BELOW THAT OR OVER THAT , IT DOESN'T DO IT EITHER IF YOU LET OFF OR IF YOU THROW IT INTO NUETRAL , IF YOU PUT IT IN TOW/HAUL MODE AND GO 60 MPH ITS FINE , I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT ? I CHECKED U JOINT - COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG BY JUST LOOKING , JACKED UP FRONT WHEELS TO CHECK BEARINGS AND THEY SEEM FINE ALSO - ANY IDEA'S FROM ANYONE ?

I had a noise in my 04. 5 at the same speeds. I had a 6 speed manual. As it turned out it was my Ring and Pinion in the rear diff. That was the magic speed to get it to making some noise...

99% OF THE TIME A RING & PINION WILL START TO GO BAD BUT THEY MAKE ALOT MORE NOISE AND GIVE YOU TROUBLE THAN THE SMALL WINDOW I HAVE , IN TOW/HAUL MODE THERE IS NO NOISE AT 60-65 SO IT CAN T BE RING & PINION , IT ONLY DOES IT AT 60 - 65 WHEN THE OVER DRIVE IS ON , STILL TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT , HOW ABOUT HAMARNIC BALACINN SOMEWHERE IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM ?

What about that other 1%? Check your rear diff, or have someone do it that knows what they are looking at... . not the dealer!

UPDATE: installed two brand new brute force rear u joints and it still does it ! i'm pulling my hair out of my head , if you go 80 mph and then just let off it , it'll come down right pass 60 - 65 and have no noise , only when your on the throttle , i came honme today with cruise control on - set at 65 mph - going up hills and normal ground level you can hear it , BUT when you come down the big hills (cruise control still set at 65 mph ) you can;t hear it , WHAT GIVES ? ANY OTHER IDEA'S OUT THERE ?

Easy now... I don't think he meant anything by that. I was actually thinking about your exhaust also. Maybe something shifted and it's causing a resonance at that mph under load (while fueling) not coasting?

2 ND UPDATE: jacked the truck up on jack stands and ran it up to 60 mph and it still doing it , atleast that takes the front end , front tires & rims and front drive shaft out of the mix , now the next thing to do is take the rims and tires off and see if it still does it - will report back

Ring and pinion on the way out.

WELL I HAD THE TIRES ROAD FORCED BALANCED AND I PUT A MUFFLER ON IT TODAY , AND THE NOISE IS STILL THERE , I HAVE IT LIMITED TO SOMEWHERE IN THE REAR END , GOING TO PULL THE AXLES OUT TOMORROW AND TRY IT ON JACK STANDS - WILL REPORT BACK

Mines doing the same thing. There is a TSB on that issue. I will be taking it in before the 70K warranty runs out

03-004-04 2wd 2500 140. 5" wb Axle whine.

This bulletin applies to 4x2, 2500 series, 140. 5 inch wheel base vehicles equipped with diesel engine, sales code ETC/ETH, and an automatic transmission, sales code DG8. The problem is that some vehicles may exhibit rear axle whine at speeds between 35 and 70 mph. The repair procedure involves identification of the pinion flange and propeller shaft that the vehicle is equipped with. If a repair is necessary, the propeller shaft is replaced using the chart listing the appropriate part numbers.

3 ND UPDATE:

took a loaded flatbed trailer for a measured distance and than hooked a new 2006 to the same load , same distance , feel both rearend covers and mine is hot,hot , the 2006 is luke warm and you can leave your hand right on it, so with all the test i have done , we have narrowed it down to the center section of the rearend , i belive carrier bearings - will call my local service man at the dealership to advise on whats next - will up date when i have more news
