I rebuilt my H1C turbo with a kit form Gillett Diesel Service. Got it back on the truck, and now have a moaning sound, as if the blades are hitting the housing. I noticed there was some slack in the shaft when I had it completely reassembled, which I didnt care for, but had nothing to lose. There are no signs of the blades hitting the impellar housing, but what else could make the noise? I figure I am not lucky enough for it to be something stupidly simple.

Ok, what are you talking about? Am I going to have to drop another $50 on a set of bearings? I thought the bearings were kinda loose going in- pushed in by hand, but I had never had one apart this far, so I didnt really know.

They have a set of upgrade bearings and they are reasonable, cheap in fact. I would not rebuild one without them at the cost. GDS Upgrade bearings for H1/HX35 and HX40 Turbochargers (1 set), p/n GDS HD BRG

Check their Dodge "all years" page on the website.

There should be no or very little play after installing new bearings. I never did an H1C, but rebuilt Holset 3LDs before (same) and a Rotomaster and the rebuilds came out nice.

Are you sure it's getting enough oil? (I had to ask).

As Forrest said the shaft could be wooped. I also had my original baby H1C completely chew the thrust bearing and ruin the thrust surface which is part of the shaft. It was not rebuildabale. So make sure that surface is not grooved or chattered looking.

Hope this helps you out.

I'll have to borrow the g/f's boss's caliper and measure the shaft diameter. The bore where the bearings rode had some scoring, which could affect stuff, I know. Guess it's disassembly time. And I was so looking forward to painting the new house today

Bill, now that I got her outta the cab, maybe I can start it up and listen again ;) :-laf

I say if the shaft is bad enough either on the dia or the thrust surface to be causing that noise, you will not have to measure it... . you'll be able to see it and feel it with a fingernail.

Jay

Coulodnt feel anything with my fingernail, so I doubt it is that bad there.

I called and talked to Gillett Diesel, and the guy said it is likely the cartirdge is shot. Keep in mind this is over the phone, and he hadnt looked at it. He said that with the wheel hitting the housing, it would likely need some machining, and I'd be better off getting a good used one. Looks like I am going to go that route, much as I hate to right now. Good excuse to upgrade, though.

When mine went it chewed up the back side of the round aluminum plate the bolts to the center section. Making that piece toast also.

I don't know the correct part names so bear with me.

There are lots of Holsets on ebay ;)
