Looking to see what you guys are getting fuel mileage wise. I have several 1st gen trucks, and am thinking about selling the fleet and getting a CLEAN 03 quad cab short bed 3500. The truck is the standard output cummins with a 5speed and 4. 10 gears. Anyhow, the truck is bone stock, and has never towed anything at all and I wanted to know what a similar combination would get fuel mileage wise.

Sam

by the way, this is a 2wd. :-laf

I miss my '03 3500 shortbed quad cab 2wd. I had the HO/6-speed. On the highway doing low 70s it would get 20. 5-22, it would get close to 20 at 80mph. Running around town it was typically 17-18.

I average 20 hand calc 60% city 40% hgwy, + or - 5 mph of posted speed limit easy of the stop lights, no hills in Fla except overpasses.

Your results with that combo might be a little lower than what's posted here. The 4. 10's will likely drop those numbers from those with the 3. 73.

PM me if you have a 1st Gen 4x4 for sale please.

I just did a 2600 mile round trip from Seattle to Eastern Montana and got a total average of 14. 8. Thats running mostly at 80mph, and over several passes.

Ok, here's a mistery. I normally average 14 in town, 21 Hwy. I fueled up, reset the Computer. Got on the Hwy, speed between 65, 70 mph. Looked up at the Average MPG. It reads 28 mpg and stops at 32 mpg over a 30 mile trip. Something isn't right. Odometer just passed 31k. See Sig about the truck...

Yes, I do! PM sent... .

I ended up buying a new 06 mega cab dually. On it's first voyage I ended up with 22 mpg according to the overhead trip computer. Put about 475 miles on it, and still have btw 1/2 and 1/4 tank of fuel left. Cruised at about 65 mph.

It is definately different than driving a 1st gen truck, but I like the room.

my truck , see sig, will average 22+ on my 110 mile a day highway commute. I don't have a city for city milage. All pencil figures.

I have heard the 2wd 03's do well in the mpg's. My 03 2500 QC 4x4 auto with 3. 73's got 19 in 50 mph mountain driving as long as it was in lock up and over 20 out on the flats. It was the CA 235hp version and the VA box helped the mpg's a tad.

4. 10's will hurt mpg's but if you keep your rpm's at 2000 or under I am sure you will be happy with what it delivers.

overhead consoles read in accurately. almost everytime I refuel I figure out the actually fuel mileage vs. the overhead console and its pretty funny how much its off. even primedia (several Magazines) said those things are way off.

I get 15 MPG modded with a sticker in the back window that says "i'm not speeding I'm qualifying" if that means anything to you. used to be around 9MPG full throttle everywhere when bought the truck stock.

Just made a trip from San Felipe, Baja to Skagway, Ak 3700 miles pulling a tandem axle trailer with a car weighing about 2800 pounds and averaged 15 miles per gallon. Basically went the speed limit, speed matters because from San Felipe to Olympia Washington, I averaged 14. 6 mpg and from Olympia to Skagway agerage was 15. 5.
My mileage with 4:10 is also affected by having the Kore Chase system, older model which raised the truck and seemed to reduce mileage by about 1 mpg when it was installed.
PS was a good trip, road in good shape

I just set a record with my truck..... constant 60 MPH, Dallas to Tulsa, very little wind..... 26. 7 MPG. I used to experience 24. 4 and 24. 6 on the same road, filling up at the same spots and same pumps. Only difference from last summer to this is Rokktech timing sensor, max. advance and Rokktech muffler. I believe the combination of those two devices is the reason for the gain. All driving above with A/C on, cruise control and hand calculated mileage. 31K on the truck, 2WD QC Short bed.

I get 15. 4 mpg hand calculated city mileage, towing my 5,000 lb boat and trailer about 10 percent of the time. THe overhead is normally pretty accurate now that i have 35" dick cepek fcII's 12. 5" wide. Empty, tHe overhead will show as much as 23mpg on level ground at 52 mph and an honest 20. 5 mpg according to the overhead for extended periods on flat ground at 55 mph or less, true speed. Without towing, I get about 16. 5-17 mpg in town. All figures above are running +50 hp setting on my bullydog tripledog programmer.
