I can't believe I could not find a thread on the the subject of the new CJ4 oil

in older Cummins diesels. Will CJ4 be ok in my yr 2000? If not, where can you get the older CG4?

BG's right. Although there is word that you may have to shorten the oil drian intervals. Something about that it wont hold contanimants as much as CH or CG oils. Seems odd, though as CJ was out for the EGR engines(that contaminate the oil more), CJ4 even more refined for emissions (diesels do burn oil, too).

I think I read in Light & medium duty trucking that if you can keep getting CH or CG oil, do so for your older engine.

The new oil has supposively reduced an anti-wear additive to protect the particulate filter on the new trucks. The oil companies claim the CJ4 oil is just as good or even better than CI4+ but so far I have heard only claims! It will probably require more frequent changing. Problem is most retailers new stock is CJ4 and to find the older stuff requires searching stores with low turnover or buying from a distributer. The CI4+ will be available until 2009(I think) because of big rig trucks owners concerns reguarding costs and compadability. I have been stockpiling CI4+ for a while and have a couple years supply, so who knows?:confused:

Read John Martin's Member 2 Member article in TDR issue #54. It starts on page 10. He did a great job of describing why we should keep running the CI-4+ oils as along as we can in our pre-Diesel Particulate Filter trucks. The way I understand it is that they reduced the detergents and additive packages in CJ-4 to reduce the Ash residue so it won't plug the particulate filter. The CJ-4 oils won't suspend or carry the soot like the older CI-4+ or CG-4 oils, which is why some manufactures are saying you might have to lower your oil change intervals when using the CJ-4 in the older diesels. Also read TDR issue #51 "new lube oils" on page 57. If you have a Jan. 07 any brand diesel with a particulate filter you have to run the CJ-4 oil.

Regards, Mike.

With this reduction of the additives in the CJ4, and if they continue we just as well start using the stuff used in a gas engine, its much cheaper. Isn't that the reason behind the "only for diesel use oil"?????? Course thats the EPA doin there job???? right ?

EPA= #@$%! :-{} :confused: #@$%! :-{} :mad:

More expensive engines, upsetting the entire diesel industry over a few years, we burn more fuel than 10 years ago, uuuugghhhh! (comparing MPG of ~300hp 12v vs. 24v)

But the air is so clean now! :rolleyes: Yeah, but now we have to kill all the polar bears in Alaska to get more oil to feed our ineficient diesels.
