VP-44 Equipped School Buses and the NHTSA

Last week I got my work truck back after it blew a head gasket, and various turbo issues. I have a 2001 International DT 466E tractor. After we got it back from the shop, I saw a dirty, crumpled sheet of paper under the extinguisher, so as I went to toss it out, I noticed some very small print on it. I looked closer, and it was a printout of the motors history.

52,598 MILES

5729 HRS

--------------

9. 18 MPH (I have a city delivery route)

Interesting also, these #'s do not match the actual hour & odometer #'s, as the dash occasionally shorts out on me, and I dont have a tach or speedo. My actual readouts are about 51,100 and about 5,500 HRS.

The thing that shocked me was that there is also a statistic on the paper that gives the total fuel used over the life of the motor!

11,472 total gals. = 4. 58 MPG:{ (again, city route:eek: )

My question is, how much can the computers on these vehicles (especially ours) tell about the use and operation of them?

I've never seen a printout on a pickup but I have seen them on an N14 cummins and a couple C15 Caterpillars. They record alot, including the number of panic stops. Average time at each speed (woops) including top speed:eek: . You can really keep tabs on a driver. I don't know about Cummins or IH but I know Cat will allow you to download this info yourself using a laptop or PDA (with the software they sell you of course).

It's B. S. for sure. On th 07's it the ecm signals you when it is time to change the oil (based on your driving style and not just hours or miles driven) to a maximum distance of 7500 miles. The manual (in fine print) on my 06 states that in the event of an accident DC can and will if necessary download information for the last few minutes before impact. *Translation* deny me warranty work if they deem it necessary.

Because it is stated in the manual YOU the driver are agreeing to this invasion of your privacy.

Actually, more and more stuff is being added continually. Typically available info is:

Total Engine hours, total engine miles, total engine revs, total fuel used, total hours at idle, trip versions of each of the above, as well as overall/trip mpg. You will also find that the motor, transmission, IPC, as well as other computer controlled devices on HD trucks have both hourmeters as well as their own clocks and odometers where applicable.

I find the hours and fuel used at idle most interesting to see usually... Our school buses spend almost 50% of their fuel at idle, either in traffic or stopped. On the bright side, we're averaging 5. 3mpg in NYC. Not bad.

Some of it sounds like big brother info gathering, but the reality is in some cases that same info helps in the diag of some issues.

The 3rd gens have a more powerful computer than the 2nd or even early 3rd's and have much more stored data.

Bob

To get the most info from the 2nd gen 24v you need to get a big truck dealer or cummins dealer to hook up the Insight system. You will get it all!

They may not have all the proper wire harneses, but they are available to them.

We have Insight at work for the machines. It's interesting to plug the laptop into an excavator and see that stuff. Hours at idle, hours at full throttle, hot shut downs, max engine temps, max hydraulic temps, number of cigarettes the operator had, fault codes, hours the machine was swinging, or moving, etc.

It gets worse. The service manager at one dealership around here said in the very near future vehicles will be given updates automatically via satellite. A system similar to Onstar. You'll just be cruising down the road and a message will go across the screen saying "update in progress" or something like that.

Haven't gotten this confirmed by anyone else but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens.

The government passed a law stating that info from a vehicles ecm could not be used to deny insurance or warranty coverage, and any such information is personal and confidential. I believe it was GM that started releasing cars with "blackboxes" and was ordered to stop and recall/remove any existing units.

The statement in the manual, if it exists, would not hold up in court, you are not given the manual to read prior to purchasing your vehicle.

Customers have requested this information. It is a huge benefit when spec'ing new equipment, analyzing existing equipment to gauge which options are working best for the applications and usage, and as an excellent diagnostic tool during repairs.

I like the information being available and hope we can get more of it.

When the governer of NJ had his accident, they used the black box to find out that his driver was going 91 mph right before the accident.

There was a test recently by Ford that recorded the last words of the driver before a fatal accident- In forty-seven states those last words were "OH S---".

In Texas, Arkanas and Tennessee the last words were -----

"HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS"

Have a nice day

I just did a full ECM print out on a customers truck today with you guys in mind. I think you will be suprised how much those old ecm's remember. Of course I forgot them at work I hope to have them on here tommorrow.

I have the print out but have no idea how to get it on here... if any one is interested let me know i'll type it out if need be

I would really like to see it but I'm not going to put you out to type all that in.

What about going to Kinkos or somthing like that and getting is scanned into a PDF file? Just a thought.
