reverse camera monitor

Has anybody used the navigation radio as a reverse camera monitor? I was just thinking that it would be nice so you don't have to have another monitor somewhere.

I have not tried because the camera input was not included on the "REC" nav radio until the 2007 model year. Mine is a 2006, and as such, does not have the input for a camera.

One of the more recent Popular Science mags had an article in their "How To" section on how to make and install one of your own. Seemed fairly slick. They powered it by tapping into the backup light wiring though, which makes me wonder if it would cause issues with our seemingly picky wiring (ie. , on the 06 models, people have had issues tapping trialer brake systems into the wiring harness).

I recently bought a reverse camera monitor and tapped into my reverse light wire with no problems that I can tell after about two months use.

The back up sonar unit Geno's sells also taps into the back up lights. I've had no problem with it at all.

I have an 07 with the Nav unit, are you guys saying that i have a plug behind the head unit for a back up camera, with out having to send it out to the link above?

There is a plug on the back of the '07 NAV units but it looks proprietary. I have been unable to find a camera that will work with it. Most cameras that I have seen use an RCA jack. The connector on the NAV unit is a 2 or 3 (can't rememmber which) pin plug. I know the new Durango has a factory optional back up camera that ties into the NAV unit but don't know what it looks like or where it mounts.

WOW let me know what you guys find. We did some cool stuff with RB1 units which was an older version of the Chrysler NAV systems. Both are made by Alpine I hope that helps someone locate a backup camera that will work.

There are only two output wires on a cam, video and video ground. Snip off the plug and find a way to input the two wires. You can't really short out a camera so don't worry. The wires will be either correct or need reversed, not tough.

In lieu of spending $1000 for a factory unit, I bought an AVIC D2 from Pioneer. An adapter will make it function 100% like new. Oh, the camera input is a normal plug type too. :-laf

The functionality far beats anything from Dodge. I like the traffic option that routes automatically around traffic. I like the usability without being stopped or the truck parked. I like the addons that Dodge unit cannot provide. I would never spring for the Dodge unit now that I have seen what other manufactorers have---for far less $$$!!!

As far as the plug on the 2007 models, you can probably go to Radio Shack and find the exact adapter needed, or you can do as suggested in the above posts. If you could get a hold of the 2007 NAV unit schematics and the earlier ones, you could figure out where to tap into the unit to make a connection.



Rarely are the guts changed by much, usually just an addition of a small circuit board, different semi-conductors, and face plates, etc. It may be that they have an entirely different head unit for the 2007's, but it probably is just built around the earlier model.

one of my customers had the RB1 and nothing was available for it from Chrysler and he found an adapter to connect his Ipod into it and it worked great

Did you give up your steering wheel audio controls, or did you go for the kit to hook them into the Pioneer? Just wondering how that works if you did it. Otherwise, nice clean installation!! Is Avic D2 touch screen??? I know factory is not.

Just another box that plugs in between the two... . piece of cake. You loose none of your steering wheel controls.

I was soooo close to just getting a Dodge Nav unit. But honestly, Pioneer is cheaper, does twice as much stuff, and @ Circuit City, can get a 5year for $100 bucks. Yes by the way, its touch screen. Before you add a factory unit, look at the Pioneer D3--there new. Price point $999... . does SO MUCH MORE than factory Dodge and an easy mod allows you to work entire unit on the go! JMHO. .
