AC acting odd

When my AC has been off for a while (it's much worse after sitting all night) I turn on the AC and the compressor engages it make a loud noise and really jerks the engine, almost like there's a lot of friction or binding that it being overcome. It does come on and if I turn it off and on again it's much less worse but still not what I think of as normal.

Any ideas?

It's ver common for you to hear a CLUNK, sometimes a very loud one!!

Yup. Seems to be perfectly normal on these trucks.

For what it's worth, my brand new '07 (250 miles or so) has done it a couple of times already.

Well for what it's worth mine does it as well. The dealer ship here in town looked at thinking it was the inside door actuator. But what they told me is that it is the high pressure line on the ac that truns to liquid versus gas at certain temps. So when you kick on the ac you get a bang or thud. Mine has done it since new when first turning on the ac. It is not quite so loud if I turn the ac on with fan setting on lowest speed. Then turn it up,so with 19000 miles no problems with it except for some very amazed looks on passengers faces when it happens.
