i have a 727 out of a 2wd truck and i want to put it in my 4 wheel drive what would be nessary to do this swap and where can i get parts to beef up the transmission? thanks for the info.

I would look for a 4x4 trans to swap in for what you have to do to get the 2wd trans to work. The 727HD is diesel specific and the tailshaft and output shaft are going to be hard to get a hold of seprate, probably be better off finding a 4x4 trans. There are a couple used output shafts on Fleabay right now for 228. 00 each, not sure if their 2wd or 4wd though. For what goes into that swap and for the benefit of OD I would try to find a 518/46RH or 618/47RH if I could find one or the other resonable.

What SD said. You have 3:54 gears. A non OD trans will drop your top speed to around 65 MPH or so. At 60 MPH right now your running around 1900 RPM. With a non OD trans you would be around 2300 RPM or so.

Put your trans in 4th and go for a drive and see what it sounds like.

I would reccommend the 47Rh if you can find one. The lockup converter would be worth the swap.

im not really planing on it being a dayly driver i mostly use the truck for truck pulling and mudding. i was hoping that i would be able to shift the truck going down the pulling track like some of the newer trucks do that seem to walk all over me. if i had 3000 dollars to swap the getrag out and put a dual disk in i would. so i figured i could build the 727 my self and save probably 500 plus dollars on labor and put that towards a better torque converter.

A Factory Service Manual is the best info for rebuilding one, another great book to get would be HP Books, Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook by Carl H. Monroe. You will need a 727HD (37RH) 4x4 tailshaft and if I am not mistaken the output shaft and some misc. Rebuild parts are available all over the net, ebay is a good place to start. Prices vary widely. How much do you want to spend?

Here's another great write up,

Tom Hand's guide to the Chrysler torqueflite automatic transmission

And Dave Goerend has a new site with instructional video now.

could someone at least tell me if you pull the front pump out first and work your way from there. or do you start with the valve body?

The pump first. Your going to need to make a set of guide pins, do you have a slide hammer? Need one of them too. The bolts come out of the pump, you screw in a couple guide pins in the guide pin locations and use the slide hammer to remove the pump. The FSM calls for special tools (hammer knockers) I used a single slide hammer, move it around the pump to pull it out evenly. I have to get the kid ready to go to school, I'll look up the bolt size etc I used for guide pins and report back later.

I have a decent 727 from my 4x4 w350 parts truck . . I'd sell it cheap like $300 bucks. . I has a shift kit etc... my nother first gen is getraged. . I'm not sure on the shipping cost for you. . If I travel out to Bgilberts I may be able to drop it off??

Let me know

Thanks

that sounds like a deal to me. send me a message on what works for you. ill check on the shipping. it will probably cost me more to buy the parts for the swap. thanks for the link to it was really helpfull. now i understand how they work a little better. i finally found a shop in town that can get me the parts that im looking for.

Buying that 4wd trans will save you in the long run. Sell the 2wd and put the money into parts to beef up the other one, there's some cool parts to be had out there. Same with the Getrag, there will be interest in it here.
