I installed my new e-brake yesterday and wanted to pass along an install tip that may be obvious to many here but I thought I was quite the genius :) I also have a question.



I was having some difficulty getting the exhaust to mate back up with the output of the e-brake. Another set of hands wasn't available and I needed to get the exhaust to move forward 1/4 to 3/8 inch. I kept tripping over the porta-power hydraulic press gizmo when it hit me, I could brace it against the gravel under the truck and press against the hanger in the same line as the exhaust at that point. It worked great!





Now for the question. When the brake is activated a very loud hissing sound is heard. I don't find any air leaks in the plumbing or on the cylinder. Is this just the sound of the pressure building up and releasing thru the brake?

The hissing sound is normal from what I hear. It is the air blowing past the butterfly or through the hole in the butterfly. (Some e-brakes have this hole). Don't know if yours does.



A friend of mine has one in a 2000, and to put it in his words "It hisses like a dragon!"
 
My factory e-brake hissed also. I was bummed at first, was hoping for that big rig sound:( Though, it worked great and I miss it now that I switched turbos. I will get another someday though... .
 
The big rigs dont have an exhaust brake like we can put in our little bitty 5. 9's. Instead a "Jake Brake" on a big rig is typically a "compression release" mechanisim that, when activated, opens the exhaust valves near the top of the compression stroke, releasing the highly compressed air through the exhaust system, not allowing ignition.

Little energy is returned to the piston, and as the cycle repeats, the energy of the truck's forward motion is dissipated through the engine compression stroke.



It is the exhaust valve opening at the top of the stroke that makes the BLAAAATT! sound you hear when a trucker hits his "Jake". You will never get that sound with an exhaust brake, unless something is really, really wrong.



An exhaust brake is essentially the same as shoving a potato up the tailpipe!
 
Yeah, I realize that all now, that was back in my ealier "less educated" days:-laf I didn't know the difference then, now, after being on here for a while I know the difference. :)

Actually, some big rigs (Volvo in particular) have both the exhaust brake and the engine brake. Really makes a nice combo.
