Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lift pump AND VP dead !!

After having a number of instances of hesitation under accelleration i took my '02 HO to the dealer. I received a call stating that the lift pump,and the injection pump were both bad. The truck has 69000 miles on it,and has the 7/100k warranty. It has had one lift pump installed since new under warranty. The dealer tells me the vp is covered,but the lift pump isn't. Is this accurate?They also said the "new" lift pump that they want to install is the in-tank version,and will cost me over $800. !! I told them i didn't want the tank mounted pump,and they said they would get back to me. What are my options here... . Do i HAVE TO let them put the in-tank pump in to get the vp covered under warranty?If the lift pump design had to be changed because of failure why do i have to pay? Any input would be appreciated. Truck is completely stock. #@$%!

First I would read the 7/100 warranty very carefully. Also if you purchased the truck less than 5 years ago, then the 5/100 Cummins Engine Warranty is still in effect for sure. If you find that the warranty will not cover the LP, ask them if you can go to Cummins and bring them a stock original type LP to install. Get a fuel pressure gauge. SNOKING

The L. P should be included as well. A former neighbor of mine had his changed a few years back under warrany. Like SNOKING said get a fuel pressure guage if you don't allready have one. IMHO stay away from the intank fuel pump, some dealers are replacing the current L. P's with an intank mounted one. The intank pump does not supply enough fuel to keep you VP44 happy.

Well here's the latest..... The dealer told me i could supply my own lift pump. I called a cummins dealer,and ordered the p/n 4090046 pump that was mentioned in another thread. I found this pump for $72. 00 plus shipping. I also read that there was a wide range of prices on this pump depending on the dealer,so i called another dealer. Thier price was over $200. 00 !! My next question is related to the electrical connections on this pump. From what i've read the plug is different,but there is an adapter harness available fom cummins. Does anyone have the part number for this adapter?The truck is a 2002 H. O. The dealer showed me some of the paperwork already,and after looking at it i told them i would supply my OWN fuel filter too. I told them i could get it a little cheaper than $100. 00 !! A local truck shop sells them for$13. 00 !!

No adapter needed for model years 2000-2002.

when I changed to a newer lift pump for MY 02 there was a "conversion adapter harness"

I do not have the part number handi but will check my records and post if I find anything.

The pigtail - Cummins P/N 4025182 - is needed model years 1998 & 1999. For these model years the engine harness is attached to the lift pump lead wires.

In 2000 things changed slightly. The lead wires disappeared and the engine harness attached directly to the pump.

The "Campaign Pump" (Cummins P/N 4090046) is the same externally as the OEM transfer pump used on the Ram model years 2000-2002.

The pigtail is just a short (eleven inch) extension cord to get from the 1998-1999 engine harness to the 2000-2002 revised pump.

The pigtail (harness, adapter) can be used model years 2000-2002, but is not needed.

finally found maintenance log, my lift pump replacement was # 3990105 and required a # 4025182 adapter harness for my 02 truck.
