The bad kind.

I just fired up the truck after the latest bombing run and was bumping the starter to bleed the new power steering cooler (actually the old auto transmission cooler) and I saw this nice warm glow coming from the back of the VE. As I was on my way to turn off the ignition, I saw a corresponding warm glow coming from the grid heater solenoid area.

It turns out that there was a small retaining tab / washer on the fuel screw. When I pulled the cover off the fuel screw I noticed the little tab, but didn't think anything of it. FYI if it rotates just right it contacts the fuel shutoff solenoid and does a really good job of turning the fusible link into a lamp. The insulation on the fusible links may be fire resistant, but it sure makes a lot of smoke! I got it shut down soon enough that the link still works, but the insulation is split in a couple of places and the wire is discolored.

Do I just tape the split spots since it is still working, or cut it out and replace it? I want to replace it if failure is now imminent, but I also don't want to fix anything else that ain't broke yet. Anybody run a "pre-tested" fusible link like that?

Ken

BTW ground pin makes good smoke too. :D

Best go ahead and replace it. It's likely "pretested" to partial failure and there's no way to tell until it leaves you in the road.

I would also tear your wire harness apart and check the blue wire going through there. I had to replace mine a couple of weeks ago, was checking to make sure my full power screw was adjusted correctly (bottomed out:)) after replacing the govenor spring when the wire came off of my solenoid and grounded out on the VE. Since my shut-off no longer works I did not notice it till I smell smoke. It toasted the wire all of the way to the plug @ the fire wall. Now I know to check that thing after it took me an hour and a half to tear it all apart fix it and get it all back in the loom.

Yeah, that was kinda my thinking as well, I think I was just hoping for the "no problem don't worry about it" post. :)

Thx,

Ken

No problem, don't worry about it! :D I'm sure if it's bad, it'll let you know about 500 miles away from home! :-laf

Well, you did ask for it! ;)

Touche, :-laf or 20 miles from home, 10 miles from pavement, on slickrock, at a 40 degree incline. Not a good time to lose power steering and brakes.
