Questions, Questions, Questions???

Ok, why are some transfer tanks not DOT certified and some are are? What creates the difference? Plumbing, baffling, strength? Just trying to figure it out.

I have found a 100 gallon tank that will fit perfect, but it is not DOT certified to hook into the fuel system.

Hence I want to figure out why.

Anybody know what and why.

Thanks :)

Liability mainly.

There's no such thing as a "DOT certified" really. As long at the tank was built per DOT regs than it's fine... but the DOT doesn't have guys going around stamping tanks, tires, cars, etc, etc. to certify it.

Buy the tank and enjoy!

A tank certification requires a drop test, roll over protection and an anti vapor release feature. Those plus the liability issue prevent most small manufacturers from building "Fuel Tanks".

Buy the 100 gallon tank and pipe it to the fuel fill pipe and connect a vapor return line to prevent a vacuum build up and you will have no problem.

Also from what I read per DOT, on tanks over 100 gallons, you need a permit for hauling HAZMAT and the tank needs to be stickered with the proper symbols.

If the fuel tank is carrying the fuel that the truck uses, then it is not placarded and you don't need a hazmat endorsement.

Hmm, I haven't seen that stipulation in the regs. Do you have a reference to that by any chance?

I actually don't remember where I got the 100 gallon thing from. I do remember reading it when I did the research to build my aux tank though.
