just in case anyone was wondering, if your truck is say, 2 gallons of coolant low, and gets an air pocket, and drives the temp to over 230, when you pull over and put it in park (to buy more coolant of course), the idle automatically raises to 1000 RPM to run the fan faster to try to lower the temperature.

don't ask me how I know.

on a completely unrelated note, I am going to flush and fill my coolant tomorrow.

Ummm... . why was your truck 2 gallons low in the first place???

turns out the water pump is leaking

it is an '03 HO auto with ~83K on it. you think Cummins will replace the pump for me?

Under warranty? Not a chance. They'll tell you to go talk to Dodge.

How long was it leaking to pump 2 gallons out? Did it ever leak on the ground?

I've heard it's an easy job.

Ryan

I wish I knew how long it has been this way. replacing it looks easy enough, just drain the system, take the belt off, take out two bolts, and replace the pump. installation is opposite of removal.

taking the two bolts out is probably going to be the most difficult, as I don't want to pop the tops right off. good excuse to take the motorcycle to work until I get the new pump
