anybody have a picture of the puller used to get the gear off the vp-44.

my pump still working excellent at 447 680 kms. I want to be prepared to do the job where ever it failes. I have the oem manuals and also the instructions from this site.

your help much appreciated,thanks. :):)
 
The pump shaft is threaded. Theres a nut and a keyway cut into the shaft with a key to drive the gear. Mine came right off when I got backed the nut off. You think yours is stuck on there?
 
I bought the II gear puller the same time I bought my spare VP-44 from them - was $25 at that time, and still a bit over priced for what it actually consists of. The VP-44 gear has the center, tapered and keyed hole - and usually DOES require a puller to break it free.



The gear ALSO has 2 threaded holes on opposite sides of that center tapered hole that the commercial II puller bolts thread into to force the gear off the shaft as the bolts on either side tighten the bar against the gear shaft. Thus, ANY suitable piece of short square bar stock with properly drilled holes to match the spacing of the threaded holes in the VP-44 gear will do the job quite nicely - and CHEAPLY! ;)



And by the way, this device/arrangement DOES pop the gear loose quite nicely!
 
If you get bored, perhaps you could measure the center to center spacing, and the size/pitch on the holes of your puller. Would like to make one before starting the job. Size of bar stock would also be appreciated. TIA

I've held off in hopes someone had easy access to a puller of their own - mine is carefully packed away in a weather tight container for long term storage with my spare VP-44 until it's needed - which I hope is NEVER! :-laf



As I recall, the bolt/thread size is the same as the bolts used to secure the Cummins air horn to the intake manifold - but I'll get out my puller, takes some pics and provide measurements so other guys can easily make up one of their own - $35 is WAY too much to pay for one of them... ;)

HOOooookayyy - here's a closup shot of the II puller - along with one of the airhorn bolt to verify size - obviously, this is the LOOooong airhorn bolt - the shorter air horn bolts would be best to use, but I was lazy, and this one was easier to remove for the pic:

A bit of red herring - as can be seen, the puller bolt holes are elongated - but the nominal spacing LOOKS to be about 1 5/8 inches - and the block itself as supplied by II is about 1/2 inch thick.

I just drilled holes in a piece on angle iron and got bolts at NAPA. Shaft sticks out of gear cover, so size is not important. SNOKING
