Has anyone out there installed a crane on their truck for load and unload? Have looked on-line at Ferarri, Venturo, Samson. These are expensive electro/hydraulic types. Looks like you need outriggers as well. EzyLift uses a two cylinder/arm with overhead gantry style loading from the rear only. These units are heavy too. Have the 07 quad 4x4 Cummins with 8 foot bed.

There are a number of them out there. Here are a few I found on the internet.

Spitzlift Pickup Truck Crane

Receiver Hitch Mounted Swivel Cranes/ Cherry Picker

Tiger Line Stow-A-Crane. Dad has one of these on our old 87 W150. Very handy, and it's out of the way when you're not using it. You can open and close the tailgate with it in the up or stowed position. Runs off a winch which can also be used to extricate yourself or other vehicles.

I like the idea of the Stow-a-Crane, but couldn't get a very good idea of actual look on a truck from the website. Does someone have this who could post pics? --Eric

My experience would not help , had 2 on 2 different trucks , 1 just hyd. & the other electric , both made in a shop , so no availability ,
Next time , because I do not need for full time work , I would go with the hyd. costs less & can be stowed , the electric was real handy with a remote & being under car/truck ect. & needing to move just a little .

I use a 2. 5 tons engine crane, it's hydraulic, easy to operate / disassemble / move around. Put it on the floor & move the truck (instead of moving stuff with crane in truck)... cannuck wisdom, eh! Dan

That won't do you much good "in the field. "

I got a cheepie from Harbor freight and installed a cable winch and pulley on the end. Also added a peice of square tubing to extend it about a foot. I use it to lift the 5er plate, Yahama 2500 gen. set, mostly liter things. It would probably lift a SB Chevy engine or smaller. Also made a bracket under the bed for extra support that is bolted to the frame. Not great, but it works for me, and I don't use it a lot. (Back surgery about 3 yrs ago. ) Depending on how heavy a load you are lifting. Northern Equip. also has an aluminum one that folds down a fits in a bag when not in use. One with cable and hyd. are better IMO. Good luck.

Here's what I did using the cheap Habor Freight hydraulic.

I used a a 1/4" steel plate across the rear of the bed to spread the load.

I mostly use it for lifting 55 gallon drums of oil or methanol for bio-diesel - works fine so far.

I have thought about some type of bearing or a pair of teflon discs placed inside the support tube for a smoother rotation.

Thats a pretty hefty lift, but it works. The teflon would be great, I no longer have a source, but in the aircraft industry, there is a sheet teflon from . o40 to . 125 thick that would work great. Until that is found, maybe a grease fitting on the side would help.
