Little off-topic, but apart from a 4BT swap in my Willys MB on M38 drivetrain mutt, this is maybe the next best thing?

Overland Diesel

Also, go on YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. and search for "Splinter Jeep" to hear it running (3 different videos).

Since I have an aftermarket 3. 6 low-range gears in my Spicer 18 T-Case, I would just need that VW to T90 transmission adapter... with 5. 38 axles and 3. 34 1st, I already have a 65:1 crawl ratio.

Right now I have the L134 Go Devil Flathead - whopping 65 HP at the flywheel from the factory.

When I got it a few years ago I had it rebuilt and the machine shop said 0. 060 over is all it can take before re-sleeving so maybe that added 0. 5 HP.

I can do 55 downhill with a tailwind. Most times, it's 2nd gear 25 mph up any hill. :-laf

Seriously, this is a pipe dream for me now since house mods take priority now. The only other things I want to do is swap my front drums for Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 discs (waiting on the workbench) and build a roll-bar for it (need friends with tubing bender that know how to weld).

That go devil motor might be little but I had one in my 49 willys and that thing would climb the brick side of my house in 1st gear low range. -Jason

Mileage

Early 80s, had a high hood 1958 CJ3B with the Hurricane 4 cylinder that got 35MPG pretty much anyway I drove it on regular unleaded.

My current VW pickup that got an exciting 40MPG with the gutless 52HP 1. 6 natural. Turn the AC on for a brake. :rolleyes:Earlier converted another with 1. 6TD that got 35MPG but would scoot. Oo.

Currently installing a 1. 9TD, replacing the natural above, but know mileage will drop. I'll be happy with 35MPG.

Which I got with a 58 Jeep gasser, that would still get that wound out at 65.

I'd really like to hear mileage figures on this diesel jeep. I sure liked the sound.

Getting above 35MPG?:-laf
