Bucking with truck on trailer

hub temps

Today went to the RV show in Keizer, OR at the Baseball Stadium and we were looking at the 35-40 triple axle toy haulers. My truck is a 2005 Dodge, 4*4 Dually CTD, with Auto and with the 3. 73 gears. Trailer limit is suppose to be 13,450 but all the toyhaulers we were looking at will be around 15,000 maybe up to 18,000lbs fully loaded. With only 34,000 miles on my truck I do not want to mess around with getting into trouble with my warranty. Has anyone had any issues towing a large trailer and getting denied coverage on anything? My truck is completely stock. has anyone ever had a dealer ask about trailer weight?

P. S. now I am kicking myself for not getting the 4. 10 gears could have towed another 2,000 with them for.

I would not want to tow that big of a trailer with only the 3. 73 gears.

If you do decide to get something that big, it's a must that you install a transmission cooler or the stock auto will simply eat itself, trust me I know.

I have a 36' toyhauler and the gross is 15,500 and that is about what it weighs when loaded. .

If you are looking at like a 29-33' toyhauler that is about 12-13K then you should be OK but you should get a transmission cooler for the above reason in last post. Unless you have a transmission get toasted by towing to hard, then there is not much for the dealer to tell how heavy you have been towing. Just play common sense and you should be good... . remember to look at your tire weights and such.

i have a 2005 dually quad cab 4x4 6 speed 4:10

I tow a 40' Toy hauler which can gross at 16,950. Usually its around 15,000.

I never gross my weight on the trailer, but even though I know I'm over the 23,000 GCVW mine(approx) is rated for . I have had no problems, but i am careful, 65MPH tops and plenty of room between me the the guy in front of me for stopping.

Your only weak link is the transmission. thats why in 05 I bought the 6 speed.

3:74 Vs 4:10 wont kill you, but you wont have the torque or pulling power the 4:10 gives. . You could put smaller diameter tires on to make up some of it .

Knowing what i know now, i would have gone with the 3:73 myself. . I tow twice or 3 x a month. The rest of the time its just a P/U truck.

Good luck in your decision.

Admins! The first line of Eric's post looks like a virus. Everything I search on shows britney. exe as a virus or worm. Never seen one post add itself to a post on a forum before

Tow pro.

I have caught a few of them but missed that one. That is annoying#@$%!

There has not been much talk about aux coolers for the 48RE, have you installed any for that specific trans?

I own 3 trucks... . 04, 04. 5, and 05 all duallys... . I tow with all mine and one trailer weighs 22K lbs. . we have no problems and my dealer has never asked how much we haul and he knows what I do... .

The 04. 5 is the 3. 73's and the others are 4. 10's... . we have to run the 04. 5 more often in 5th than the other trucks... . but no other problems...

BTW the 6 speed is not designed to run in 6th with real heavy loads. . the OD gears can't carry the load... . so 5th is a better choice for those loads anyway... .

In your case, the additional transmission cooler would be a must... .

Just my thoughts.

Sure I have sold many transmission coolers to guys with both the 47 & 48 RE. The beauty of the Super Coolers is that they are so simply to install, and everything is included in the kit. We use only the best materials and all the hardware is stainless steel. if you want the best transmission cooler for your truck then the Super Cooler is it, if you are more interested in saving money then cooling your transmission, then I would look else where.

Please explain "why" your Super Cooler is the best. What kind of heat transfer testing has been done? Reliablility testing? Etc.

You are referring to the older transmission's, right? I've not heard that about the G-56's. With it's shorter OD ratio, certainly they wouldn't expect one to not tow with it...

Run loads 20,000 to 30,000+ GCW on a daily basis. I have towed loads with my g56 for 80,000 miles in 6th, and on my 04. 5 NV5600 for 243,000 miles with absolutely no ill effects. Both wth 3. 73's.

Towed my 01 auto (3. 54 gears) with the stock cooler for 403,000 miles with no overheating issuses. Thats hauling oilfield equipment all over Texas and up into wyoming. I do reccomend Amsoil transmission fluid.

Get what you want and yank the heck out of of it. Just get a set of Firestone airbags to level things out.

Most all your trans heat is generated from the unlocked torque converter. I have an ATS (DTT is equally good) torque converter and it locks up at 18 mph instead of the normal 45. At speeds under the 45 mark your torque converter heat is frying your trans. At a very minimum get an after market t/c and controller. It'll be money well spent. I have a 98 with a 48RE. At 96,000 the oem trans went out and replaced it with the after market unit. The truck now has 178,000 and no problems, except one. VERY Important, towing heavy (19,000 in my case at the time) my trans ate the input shaft. I had it replaced with a hardened billet (one piece) input shaft and I'm back in business. My trans temps almost never go over 160*. I just bought a new 39' toy hauler 5th wheel. While bringing it home and climbing a serious grade out of Primm, Nevada my temp gauge registered 210*. I'm not sure where under the hood a guy would put another cooler. Is the idea to replace the oem unit with another aftermarket piece? My oem cooler is doing fine but that could be because of the lockup t/c I use. Good Luck
