Wheel bearing failure

Had one go on me right before exit 210 on I80 in Pa on Tuesday. $430 and a day wait I got it back on the road. Had all the tools to get the old one off except a BFH. Called a service truck for that. BZ motors in Lewisburg is where I purchased the new bearing. They where a great help and drove the part up to me at the Comfort Inn. Checked the other bearing while I was waiting and it was still tight. Im going to replace it soon anyway . 181k on the truck. Im quite pleased with how reliable its been. First time Ive been stranded with it. Didnt somone find a less espensive source for the bearings on these things. I know autozone has a valucraft part number but no pricing or availabilty info. I wouldnt put valucrap anything on my truck though.

I believe thats the 4wd bearing. I unfortunately have a 2wd. But thanks anyway for the info.

No problem,Im going to call timken when i get back to work and see if they have anything for the 2wd yet. There has to be somone that has it for less than the dealer. I havent tried napa yet though.

Talked to Timken. The Part number is sp550103. They will have them in about two weeks to distribute. Hopefully theyll get to my store in about a month. Ill post pricing when I get it.

One word... leverage! Oo.



The wheels are going to place a lot more force on the bearing when you change the off set.

I just replaced one on my truck. The BR930475 is the 2wd model and the price has gone up. I paid $214 from EB Atmus shipped. If you are looking for one the # is 800-666-6761 ask for John Edwards. Hope this helps.

Sgt Craig, the 2wd #is the SP550103. I got one from parts plus auto store#800-830-2885 for $250 + shipping. Now heres the deal... . I've been chasing this bearing for almost a month. The one that I got from ebatmus was defective and they didn't know if they could replace it or issue a refund. SKF has one person that is in charge of warranty and he was busy. In the meantime the other side went out so I was waiting for a decision on the defective one. When he found time to evalute the bearing he said that it wasn't torqued properly. I call BS on that however they are giong to issue a credit. In the meantime I found the Timken bearing. Now get this... . the warranty for SKF is 12/12 and for Timken it is LIFETIME!!! Just doesn't make sense to me. Hope this makes sense and sorry for the long post... . Also SKF is out of this part at this time.

Probably because as the fleet has aged every truck from salt states is having the bearings destroyed when the u-joints are replaced.

Ryan, when you replaced your's did you use the SKF or the Timken units?? just curious.

SKF. Wasn't aware Timken were available at the time, so I went with OEM.

As an aside, I thought SKF was a newcomer to bearings, but they aren't. I happened to be at a railroad museum a few months back and was amazed to find many of the bearings on the old steam locomotives were SKF.

I wasn't aware of that as well. I used to work on the RR back in the 60s and 70s and I can remember that all of the wheelbearings were timken.
