Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Exhaust & Shocks

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Wait to Start Light ?

A budy of mine was on a 400 mile trip home and started having problems. After 20 phone calls to various people, he figuerd out his just-replaced fuel filter was clogged. He had fueled up with some bad diesel at a tiny station and sand had impacted his fuel filter. The original issue was loss of power and then white smoke out of the exhaust. He drained the tank and replaced the fuel filter a couple of times to make sure the fuel was good.

Now the question. What damage was done to make the truck have less power now, than it did before the fuel starved issue. The truck is a 2001 six speed dually.

I think I read in the paper publication about the injector pump wearing if fuel pressure dropped. There was a picture ot two with some really bad wear. IYO is that what happened to him?

Any info is helpful.

I would check the lift pump pressure at the Vp44. It's possible the contamination did a number on it. Also he can check for codes by turning the ignition key on and off three times leaving it in the on and reading the codes(if any) in the odometer slot. The LP pressure should be 10-15 at idle and no less than 6-8 under hard accelleration!

Thanks.

He replaced the lift pump a couple of days later. It was weak. Almost no pressure under accel. He was hoping that was going to fix the problem. It was noticed that the pump was not original anyway.

There were codes when it happened, but they have been cleared. No others since.

C'mon guys, I would really like the question answered by people with real world experience. If I can't get a good answer here the truck is going to have to go to the "stealership", and they will want to replace everything. Everything I have read and searched, says the injector pump and I would like more than a "might be" answer.

Has this never happened to anyone? Bad gas then starved for fuel.

Still looking for suggestions.

Keep in mind that the Cummins 100k starts "after" the 3/36 DC expires - don't let the _teelership convince you otherwise. They will try for sure. If you already mentioned the sand in fuel to the dealer (as long as they didn't type anything into theie system) you should take to another dealer and be OK. Ah, this is assuming the miles are within 136k? Sorry I'm one of the few luck ones with the OEM VP - hope I didn't just jinx myself

Tank pickup screen might be plugged. Is there a fp gauge in the truck he can watch when he mashes the throttle?

I didn't even think of that! Thanks, it makes sense, I'v seen it a hundred times on gassers, especially fuel injected ones. We have a gauge that can be stuck under the wiper. I'll do that.

There should be 2 screens on the bottom of the fuel tank module that very well could be clogged. May be best to drop the tank, pull the module out and clean the screens and tank.
