Well,... its been quite an experience:-laf. I finally got around to fixing my leaking rear main a couple of weekends ago. It was leaking so bad that I didn't drive the truck much. So I rolled up my sleeves, bought a Freight Harbor transmission jack and "got 'er done", so to speak.

It took a come-a-long and a slide hammer to get the flywheel off. Challenging to say the least. Since I had it apart I decided to have the flywheel machined for the ball bearing style pilot bearing from Quad4x4 instead of the OEM roller bearing. Of course, it was time to invest in a new clutch set up, since I was in there. It was one huge challenge to stick the transmission. It didn't seem to want to go through the new bearing. Finally, gave up and very slowly used the bolts to stick it home whilst periodically turning the transmission output shaft to see if I was destroying the new bearing. YEEESSHHH.

Got her all back together and drove her to Alpine for church as a test run. Good to be back in a real vehicle;). So, on Monday I crawled back under to hook up the transfer case vent hose that I couldn't figure out where the far end was suppose to go... . thanks fellow TDRs. Lo and behold! The rear main oil leak was just as bad as when I started#@$%! I could have almost cried... . but decided a good cussing befitted the occasion instead.

Fortunately, I decided to do some searching on the TDR before taking the truck apart again. There was a couple of mentions about rocker cans 5 & 6 leaking and appearing to be the rear main. Hmmm... didn't I just do the valve lash about 1K ago..... DOOOAH!!! So I redid 4, 5, & 6 and re-torqued all of them. Guess what... . no more leak. Do you have any idea how much time, money, and perfectly wasted cuss words went into this project? Bottomline, the only reason I'm hanging this out there to remove any doubt about just how dumb this dog is... . and to save somebody else the ignominy of a like experience.

A fellow could easily lose his salvation bluing the air with in-appropriate language. Sigh... . guess thats why I need a savior, neh? Chapter 2 to follow.

I had a 94 model that was leaking, so when 5th gear come loose I decided to go ahead and fix rear main while down that far. It turned out to be the transmission input shaft was leaking because the pilot bearing had whipped out and so was destroying the input bearing in the front of the transmission!!

More Doooah!!! It Yourself

Chapter 2:

With the truck back together it was time to test if resetting rocker cans did the trick. So, I went out to get a load of firewood. (Also wanted to test out the Dolmar 5100 and 7300 that I picked up this winter to replace the Stihl 039 that I got ripped off on Ebay... . but thats another story )

I noticed the truck was overheating so I nursed it home. This weekend I drove into the big city for a test drive, fuel up, and pick up a thermostat if need be. On the way in the truck didn't overheat. So everything was fine. Until... . I drove home, when it started to heat up. It was running about 210 on the gauge. The top hose was hot, so it wasn't really diagnostic of a bad thermostat. But, it was better than flushing the radiator, or having the radiator rodded at some shop. Might as well take this a step at a time, starting with the cheap alternatives. So, after I got home I drove 40 miles back to town in the car to pick up a thermostat and seals.

I was just starting to disassemble the truck. By the way, the petcock that is suppose to drain the radiator isn't working for some reason???? #@$%!. So I undid the top hose. Whoa what is this:eek: I notice I still had my winter front (piece of hard plastic) inserted in front of the radiator.

DOOOAH!!!

Remove winter front and voile, go get another load of firewood, everything works like it is suppose to. I'm certainly glad none of you has ever done anything as boneheaded as this month has been. DIY and get 'er done ;)

Look back in my posts and you'll see a fit I had with a certain lincoln welder... What was that the apostle Paul said about edifying language?

don't be so hard on yourself. people make mistakes every day and fornunatly for you, you DIY! congrat's

Besides, he's allowed a senior moment or two. And it might not be unreasonable to allow him the occasional 'senior month'. :D

After all, I turned a 2 hour 'replace the main water valve into the house from the well with a ball valve' yesterday into a solid 8 hour job. Prepped and sweated the joints, and the water poured out. Did it again, same thing. Finally went out to eat with Dad and bought a couple new elbows on the way home. Cleaned, dried, fluxed, and sweated. The one new elbow worked. But the other joint still failed. So I put the other new elbow on there. Finally. No leaks. And this afternoon, the tepid hot water reminded me I forgot to flip the water heater's breaker back on. Sigh. And the new valve didn't solve the problem: good pressure with low demand, low pressure with higher demand. I'm thinking the outside pipes are clogged with iron/rust by now.

So looking under the street light for the dropped coin because that's where the light is isn't all daft. There's a madness in the method.

I do water heater service, you wouldnt believe how many people melt down their elements, then blame it on the heater! hehhh... it will usually only blow the upper element though, as thats the one to come on first...
