I just passed the Ct emissions test.

No adjustments prior, just let them run her thru.

Then as I was leaving their parking lot... . well, let's just say the mosquitos won't be hangin' round there for a while!!:-laf:-laf

edit: Yes the 15. 6 hp was the same!!

Let's say you have POD's and no pump reverse lever ... ... ... ..... then what is the outcome when the guy performs the throttle test, ahem? Their test equipment only registers up to 45. 9% opcaity. :--):--)

What exhaust stack does the inspector insert the opacity probe into. :-laf

Do they adorn themselves with white lab coats... ... ... ... . ? #@$%!Diesel#@$%!

Jay, What does the test involve?

NY must not have a Diesel emissions requirement, Or mine is too old or too far upstate.

I did just put a muffler on my rig that is so big it takes all day for the exhaust to find it's way out. Maybe that would help in a test. Sure is quiet.

Congratulations J,

I took mine in a couple of weeks ago and I too had a whopping 15. 6 horsepower. It says my opacity reading was "0". There is a column that says "Opacity Limit (%)" and that says the limit is "20. 0". So whatever all that means is anyones guess, but they got their twenty bucks, and Ct is a cleaner place.

What does 15. 6 hp stand for?

In New England they calculate RWHP The test is performed by the inspector and he/she must them take the square root of 15. 6, divide that by the number of cylinders. Figure in baro pressure/ambiant temps and the cost of diesel fuel that day.

A quick summery of Jay's reading that day would equate to roughly 366. 7 (calculated) RWHP . Give or take a few points, but roughly that.

:p

Just kidding. It would be more like 350 RWHP

:D

LOL. . no I don't think so. Clutch never slipped;)

Jay, What does the test involve?

It involves the owner sitting in a room with only a camera monitor. . I guess that's so you can tell that the operator leaves the truck running with the door open, then you can yell at them afterward... after they tell you that you passed that is.

Seriously they back the truck onto a set of dyno wheels, plug some BS into the computer (like your VIN) and then they run the truck at 40 mph in 4th gear.

I think the 15. 6 is the calculated hp it takes to go 40 mph in 4th gear on a level road with an empty truck ??

Sounds about right. My boost gauge doesnt hardly move at that speed, even with the 60/12 turbo on there now.

My . 02 worth;

I believe it takes just that to operate your PS pump. Then, quite possibly another 3 to 5 HP to operate the mechanical lift pump. Then you factor in the parasetic loads of the engine like other elements such as alternator, oil pump and then enter wind drag, tires etc. etc. (read John Holmes article) and you quickly learn that it's much more like 3/4 times that just to move the vehicle under it's own weight across a flat surface a 40 MPH in 4th gear.

Has anyone had the oportunity to use a machine that measures HP via a hand cranked generator? To produce a steady 1 HP, you have to be long winded and have a pretty good arm.

Try to operate your worn out mechanical lift pump just by moving the lever.
