OK, I'm feeling I have an injector going bad... sounds like a valve tick under light load and cruise, but goes away at WOT and idle. Adjusted the valves about 25k ago... removed the Rokktech sensor earlier this week (that helped some actually, but it is still there). Mileage is better than it has ever been and I haven't been seeing anything that would make me suspect fuel in oil... just not sure what this tick is...

I've read DC can do a efficiency test on the injectors to see if one is bad??? Is this a DC-only thing or is there another test to see if an injector is going bad??? I have a trip to Utah coming up that will be over 4k miles of towing 10k... don't want to be F. O. R. D. halfway between here and there...

Anyone have a place close to SE PA (within 200 miles) they recommend to have this done??? I don't trust any of my local dealers and the local Cummins shop isn't what it used to be.

I had the same ticking noise. I thought it was the valves needing adjustment and checked one by one and nothing. It would only do it under light load or maybe I couldn't hear it under WOT. Whatever the case, I pulled the injectors (they were not stock) and got a set of Don M's and the problem went away. Hope this helps.

Wasn't TST working on a diagnostic tool to shut down injectors one at a time to test them? What ever happened to that?

I know I read that the one Snap-on scan tool has the ability to shut one down at a time, but they are pricey.

I thought I read something about DCX's star-tool being able to conduct what amounted to an efficiency test on each injector that gave a percentage???

There's a shop who's owner is on here that I'm going to give a call and see if I can have them take a day and if nothing else, adjust the valves... or worst case, replace the injectors if they are deemed a problem.

I can live with the noise... just bothers me that one might be getting ready to give up, especially when I drive this truck cross country on a quarterly basis with a pretty tight schedule.

Yes, anyone with a DRB or Starscan will be able to check injector efficency. The Snap On scan tool might do the same, but I am not sure...

From the sounds of it I had the same "tick. " I had a 500 gallon tank full of diesel with Power Service added. I noticed the "tick. " I tried some diesel from a dealer and adding BGs DFC Plus. Tick gone within 5 miles. I added Amalgamated's TDR mix in the last fill up of the 500 gal tank and both trucks in my sig seem quieter than ever.

Your additive may be the cause.

Oh really???

Well, that's easy enough to change... thanks for that bit of insight.

Maybe I'll need to go back to Howes during the summer... or get the stuff the local Cummins shop handles CPPF?? (They swear by it. ) I was going to buy some amalgamated, but shipping makes it unrealistic... maybe I will pick up some the next time I travel through there.

Mine's going in on Wed. to get the injectors gone over. They've done the shutdown thing before, but that only works for one that's more or less totally shot. The efficiency thing has been done before, but that all showed up "well within spec".

Wed. they're going to check out the injector tubes and possible do the return flow test. Hopefully they find something.

This is getting old:

See, mine doesn't do anything wierd... other than tick. My mileage is good. Power is alright... no misses. Smokes pretty good for a stock truck since I replaced the FCA...

All I got is this tick and while it does sound like a valve (backlash), it also doesn't.

Not sure what your tick sounds like, but mine has ticked like you describe since new. Not much, but audible. Goes away on hard acceleration. I think it might be a normal sound from the CP3. I read on here that the CP3 can be "timed" or something to get rid of some of that.

Even with all the goofiness mine dishes out, I still get good mileage and the power is still there... except for a few weeks ago when something was not right. That seemed to fix itself though.

Yea, I get the "tick" whenever I run additives with a cetane boost, it isn't bad at all but I don't like it so I either run howes or lucas, not saying this is your problem but it sounds a lot like it, good luck to you buddy and I hope it's nothing more than this.

If you run a box with timeing advance you can get the "tick/rattle" especially with aftermarket injector nozzels, though I didn't see any such box in your sig. I also just went with DonM injectors (and he did a refurb job on the injector bodies) my truck has NEVER been this smooth or quiet, not even when it was bone stock.

The only real "mod" to my truck was the FASS and the RokkTeck (which I already removed)... the truck is pretty much stock in that respect.

I just filled up and used Howes... but it'll take me a tankful to even get this fillup into the main tank to actually see an effect... only problem running an auxilary tank.

Ohh, and I got a local CTD enthusiast that has seen a bunch of CR issues in his own truck that I'm going to have take a ride in my truck and tell me either "yeah, that's bad... " or "you're paranoid, turn the radio up louder... "

It'll make me a little more at ease if I have someone else listen to this thing as being the first 3rd gen I've owned and not seeing any of the problems... I don't really know what I'm listening to? If you can understand that. What might be a real problem, might only sound like a valve noise to me and I'd never know...
