MaxBrake Brake Controller?

Very rare, but authorized back with the CDL implementation. I have kept it just for bragging rights, not sure if you can still get one or not. When I switched my CDL over to Texas a few years back, they deleted it! I refused to pay for or take the license, they called the powers that be in Austin, after a while they issued me the "appropriate" license, with motorcycle on it. I like to "collect" licenses, like my international drivers license with motorcycles - AND a sidecar indorsement!.

.
I was "grandfathered in" as well and have every endorsement you can get but I've never heard of a MOTORCYCLE CDL. Wazz up with dat?

I think that the best part of it all is that the state police don't really know, CD

First off, I have a class A cdl, with all endorcements. And you are correct, the state police got really confused when CDL's were first issued.

I got stopped for a roadside inspection driving my pick-up truck, right after CDL's first came out. In Illinois, the Class A read "any combo vehicles of 26001 or over", so the trooper was kinda laughing when he said my class A was no good to drive my pick-up!!! Seems I had to have a trailer on the back so it was a "combo vehicle. " We both got a chuckle, and I was on my way.

And let's not even get into air brakes, which are a restriction, not an endorcemtnt.

AND, do you know why rear window defoggers were put on Yugo's as standard equiptment? So you kept your hands warm in the winter as you pushed them.

For me its hard not to notice the honet sincce my family are AMC nuts, right now we have 5 AMXs and have had many others. As for this cdl thing who knows what some one will say at any given time and place. I tow a trailer from time to time for my buisness and I quite often cross state lines doing so and hualing kitchen equipment in my truck so I guess i should have a CDL. I know acording to some that I should have a health card witch i used to have a while ago.

Could be, don't have many miles of experience on one of those!:-laf

Ahh, heck when I turned 14, that was ALL the rage in our neighborhood!

We had no 4-wheelers, but we did have dirt bikes ... ..... that the Sheriff would threaten to confiscate if we rode the road.

The moped was a bike with a motor, LOL, they did eventually make it 16, but in Ohio, at one time you were legal at 14!

DON/TX... ... . Living in Wichita, KS. , I am very familiar with some of the antics of the guys at the South Haven, KS. port of entry. Rumor is that it serves as a training facility for a KDOT school in the Winfield/Ark City area.

A few years back, a rookie inspector cited me for having my CURRENT day logsheet "unsigned". I asked where this rule is written in the federal reg's. He just replied that all logs must be signed, including the current day. ***Now who in their right mind would sign an open-ended contract? Which is what I would be doing if I signed my logs BEFORE the end of my day/shift!!!!!!***

So, Don/Tx, what is your take on this?

I would hope you fought that one??

Ok is this legal. I purchased a 48 ft enclosed race trailer with living quarters. I went to the registery to register it . I asked what do I need for a license and to register it. I asked every question I could they said register it is going to be as a camper it has living quarters. I said what about the cars in the back doesnt matter it is a camper you are excluded for any other registration. You can drive it with a class c. I asked i will be towing to races nope its non comercial. I then asked a ****** off dot cop the other day he said you need a cdl I asked why he walked away does anyone know the truth on this ???????????????

if you are potentially 'gaining' from the use of the trailer (by hauling a race car that you race for a trophy or purse for example) then you need a CDL if your combo fits the 26,001lb combined limit.

if your truck is 10,500lb and the trailer is 14,000lb, you are okay as you do not meet the 26,001lb limit. If the trailer is a 20,000lb rating, then you are over 26k combined and if you are using the trailer for any gain at that given instance, you need the CDL.

The 9,000# truck and a 15,000# trailer, at least in CA, does not require anything special as long as its not commercial.

If the 15K trailer is a 5th wheel with a GVWR of 10K-15K you need a RV Trailer endorsment in California. The RV trailer endorsement is a written only test that the DMV people won't know about and will have to look it up.

Well, been too long, but I never signed mine until I completed it, same reasoning as you.

Back in my heyday, the South Haven POE was used as training grounds before you could go out on the road on your own (nice place now, was just an old mobile home then). It was a good idea, there are so many strange things about that business, you just gotta get some practical experience first.

The biggest thing I learned was that there are RULES, then there are rules that can be enforced (penalty clause for the rule). It would surprise you how many laws you can break and never pay a penalty because there is none. .

I would hope you fought that one??

JHardwick, the person was correct, if you are hauling for hire as you are doing, you do need a CDL. Bonus, in MI you also have to get a Chauffers license, but if you are operating a semi hauling a steam engine to shows you would only need the class A.

I understand wanting somebody to understand how to operate the big trucks, but I guess they just want to get more money from those driving for a living.

Something that has not been brought up here, is that with a CDL you are subject to a different set of rules than the normal driver is. In most all cases, the rules are stricter. For instance, you cannot be as drunk when driving, and in Texas, you do not qualify for the school in lieu of a fine for many offenses. Some states even fine you heavier with a CDL. It makes no difference if you are in your Yugo or an 18 wheeler when caught. I have often thought this could be challenged, since the same offense in the same state with the same vehicle results in different punishments.

It also doesn't matter whether you're driving your CDL-required truck hauling hazmat or your personal car taking the family to the mall... with the CDL, they are more strick on both fines and requirements.

And that goes for drunk driving limits too, which is a bunch of BS since that implies to me that with a CDL license, you are never really "off-duty". I'm sure if I got pulled over when driving cross country, they'd have a field day with me (driving over 18 hours without a break)...
